We are excited beyond belief that Ted Nasmith has agreed to be a guest on our March 21st episode! Ted will be talking about his incredible Tolkien artwork and more. Get those questions ready!

Ted is a widely published illustrator of Tolkien and other fantasy fiction, and a long time Tolkien Society member. He is also an accomplished architectural renderer, and his career has also included book illustration and automotive portraiture, among other work. He lives in Bradford, Canada, and regularly appears at fan events, and also exhibits his art in the UK annually.

Ted, gifted from an early age, studied commercial art at Toronto’s Northern Secondary School from 1969 to 1972, graduating with honours. He was soon hired by Visual Concept, a studio in which he was trained in architectural renderings, and settled into a career as a ‘renderer’, as they are known.

Through the 70s and 80s he privately expanded his body of Tolkien art and dreamed of being published, only to be frustrated initially over several years. When the breakthrough came, he had created dozens of Tolkien artworks, but in the years that followed, he began to consider Tolkien his main vocational calling as recognition increased and accolades accumulated. Calendars also accumulated, particularly after 1990, when his first solo calendar appeared. Architectural work soon was eclipsed by his growing reputation as a Tolkien illustrator.

His credits in Tolkien now include several cover pieces, the illustration of The Silmarillion (1998/2004), games, puzzles, role-playing cards, and other secondary uses of his artwork.

Ted’s other interests include music, whether listening, performing or composing, reading in a variety of genres, film, live theatre, photography, and a deep love of skies, weather and natural beauty. He recorded a highly praised music CD in 2007, fulfilling a longstanding ambition for his musician alter ego, and hopes to expand on this offering in future. He continues a lifelong affair with art inspired by JRR Tolkien, while continuing to grow in other genres, most recently increasing the frequency of outdoor sketches.
