How did you get involved in this project? 4:55 - How did you first get involved with Flora and David and when you did you realize there was a movie there? 8:08 - There are a lot of ups and downs in the story. Flora's life isn't perfect. Why did you call the film One Lucky Elephant? 9:38 - Instead of taking a wider issue-oriented focus, you focus more on an individual and character stories. Why did you take that approach? 11:32 - After focusing on these people for so long, which issues do you feel like are the dominant ones you hope people respond to and come away thinking about? 14:30 - Your film brings up larger issues about how humans tend to impose certain constructs onto animals, even certain psychological diagnoses. 18:19 - Has this film changed how you view your own pets? 19:39 - Did your relationship with Flora changed over time? 21:45 - Elephants can be dangerous! I'm sure you had to take extreme safety precautions. 23:38 - How can people see the film? DON'T FORGET: Check out the website at www.randomchatter.com. How do you respond to people who might think bees are a small issue in comparison? 9:59 - Your film brings up several problems that need solving, but is still very optimistic. You pay close attention to grassroot beekeeping groups around the world and point to them as a hopeful solution. Do you keep bees yourself? 12:56 - One of the benefits of keeping bees is the honey. How much honey did you eat during the course of making this film? 14:31 - Of all the places you visited, which place had the best honey and why do you think it had the best honey? 16:56 - This isn't your first film on agricultural issues. Why do you keep returning to this topic? 19:32 - Is there a solution to the problem, or are we all doomed? 21:50 - Tell me more about how our listeners can check out the film. 9. MC #168: Eat The Sun w/ director Peter Sorcher http://feedproxy.google.com/~r... download (audio/mpeg, 30.40Mb) Description: In this special bonus episode, Andrew talks to filmmaker Peter Sorcher about his new documentary Eat The Sun, which was recently released on DVD and premieres on The Documentary Channel on June 21. The film follows Mason Dwinell, a man who believes that the practice of sungazing can potentially replace the human body's need for all other energy sources, including food. Is it as crazy as it sounds, or is it in fact possible to go for years without eating? SHOW NOTES: Interview w/ Peter Sorcher: 3:37 - Your movie follows sungazing enthusiast Mason Dwinell. How did you first hear about Mason and why did you decide to do this documentary? 5:34 - One of the most interesting things about the issue of sungazing is the idea that it could potentially replace the need for food. That seems like a very radical idea. It's hard to convince people to stop eating meat, let alone to stop eating entirely... 7:51 - You interview a man named Wiley who claims that in his prime he could lift over 1000 pounds due to sungazing. Tell me more about your interaction with him. 11:13 - Mason and many other people you interview seem isolated and almost arrogant about this lifestyle, perhaps due to low self-esteem. What do you make of that? 15:31 - There's a deleted scene on the DVD in which Mason locks himself in a hotel room for a month with no food. Why did you delete that scene? 17:51 - In the film, you follow sungazing guru H.R.M. around to see whether or not he eats anything. Did you do the same with Mason? 19:50 - The structure of the film allows you to come across as very objective. How did you approach the structure while you were shooting and editing? 23:50 - You were filming Mason in 2003 and 2004. The film screened at its first film festival in 2009. Why the long gap? 25:15 - Have there been any major development with Mason or other people in the film? 26:20 - Have you tried sungazing, and if so what's your opinion on the supposed benefits of sungazing? 29:02 - Tell me more about the DVD. What are the special features, and how can people find out more about the film? DON'T FORGET: Check out the website at www.randomchatter.com. 108. MC #69: Interview with Tucker Max and Nils Parker http://feedproxy.google.com/~r... download (audio/mpeg, 26.15Mb) Description: [NOTE: This is the censored version. For the uncensored version, visit RandomChatter.com] In this special bonus episode, Andrew chats with screenwriters Tucker Max and Nils Parker about their upcoming film I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell. Tucker is a bestselling author and blogger whose writings have inspired a great deal of debate over the past few years for their perceived sexism. The first half of the interview focuses on the film; the second deals directly with Tucker and all the controversy that surrounds him. NOTES FROM ANDREW: Tucker Max: Tucker Max is the bestselling author of I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell, a collection of essays which narrate his personal stories of debauchery, drunkenness, and sexual conquests. His website, www.TuckerMax.com, attracts millions of viewers and has gained notoriety for its frank discussion of similar stories. He also served as a co-writer and co- producer on the film adaptation of I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell, which opens nationwide on September 25th. Nils Parker: Nils Parker is the co-writer and co-producer of the film adaptation of I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell, and a good friend of Tucker. The Controversy: Tucker Max has been credited by some with helping to invent a new genre of writing known as "fratire." His writing usually focuses on personal stories of drinking to excess and his various sexual conquests. Many people view his stories as sexist and misogynistic, and as a result controversy seems to follow wherever he goes. This interview was no different. It occurred after a screening of the film at N.C. State University. Nearly a hundred protesters were present at the theater holding signs that accused Tucker of promoting a "rape culture" and being a misogynist. You can read more about the situation here, here and here. Tucker has posted a response to the protesters, which you can read here. The Interview: The interview was conducted in the IHTSBIH tour bus following the screening. I apologize for some of the sound quality - with the way the microphone was set up, I wanted to make sure that Nils and Tucker's levels were crystal clear, but as a result my levels were slightly lower. This has been fixed as much as possible, and you shouldn't have too many problems understanding my questions. This interview is unedited, complete with minor interruptions. It was very casual, and Tucker and Nils do occasionally use profanity, so you can choose to listen to either a censored or an uncensored version. Also, due to the controversy surrounding Tucker, I need to emphasize that MovieChatter neither condemns nor condones the opinions expressed in this interview. In the second half of the interview I focused entirely on Tucker and some of the heavier issues associated with him, and it's possible that, as with most everything regarding Tucker, some people will find his answers offensive. While we encourage healthy discussion of these issues, please do not send us angry emails just about the fact that we interviewed him. Our goal is to talk with filmmakers from all walks of life, even the ones that, to paraphrase Nils, "live in the gray." On that note, I hope you have as much fun listening to the interview as I did recording it. Miscellaneous: The official website for the film can be found here. Tucker Max's site can be found here. During the interview, I mention an editorial that Tucker wrote a few years ago. It's entitled "Pass the Beer: A Defense of Fratire," and can be found here. One question focuses on Matt Czuchry. He is the actor that plays Tucker in the film. |

This is the first part of our 2008 MovieChatter Awards Extravaganza, where we cover the best and the worst of 2008. |

147. MC_2008: Happy Holidays! http://feedproxy.google.com/~r... download (audio/mpeg, 3.36Mb) Description: We've pretty much gotten to the point where none of the hosts' schedules are compatible with each other's due to various holiday commitments, so we're signing off until the end of the year. But I've recorded a very short holiday message I'd like everyone to listen to. I'm putting it in all four feeds to make sure everyone gets it, but it's the same file, so you only need to listen to it once. Please check out our brief holiday episode. Thanks for listening, and stay tuned for great things ahead in 2009. HAPPY HOLIDAYS! |

148. MC_030: Milk, The Day the Earth Stood Still http://feedproxy.google.com/~r... download (audio/mpeg, 26.02Mb) Description: We've got multiple movies for you this week -- and I when I say "we" I mean "they." Ren and I (Erik) were unable to make this recording. But fear not! Andrew and Morgan discuss Milk, The Day the Earth Stood Still, some Jesse James movie, Noir, umm.... and some other stuff I don't remember, because this episode is just way too jam-packed! It's eXtreme!. P.S.: Yes Morgan, you're correct. There is sometimes a "C". P.P.S.: Yes guys, I am still listening. You do realize the outtakes are almost as long as the actual episode, right? ;) P.P.P.S.: You have fake blood all over your walls? How did you manage to.... ahh, nevermind. |

149. MC_029: Transporter 3, Australia, Bolt http://feedproxy.google.com/~r... download (audio/mpeg, 15.70Mb) Description: Got a triple-header for you this week. Erik and Ren trash Transporter 3, Andrew reviews Australia, and Morgan, Erik and Ren discuss Bolt. |
150. MC_028: Twilight, Rachel Getting Married http://feedproxy.google.com/~r... download (audio/mpeg, 8.89Mb) Description: It's "Attack of the Chick Flicks" week here at MovieChatter. Morgan saw Rachel Getting Married, Andrew saw Twilight, and Erik saw Bolt. Unfortunately, Erik's a bit under the weather, so he's sitting this episode out (we'll have a Bolt review later this week). But be sure to check out this review of Twilight and Rachel Getting Married! |
151. MC_027: Quantum of Solace http://feedproxy.google.com/~r... download (audio/mpeg, 32.13Mb) Description: Cool new Bond flick, or Bourne rip-off? In this episode, we talk about Quantum of Solace, the sequel to Casino Royale. Morgan hated it, Erik loved it, and Andrew was wishy-washy (he's not writing this post, so I can say whatever I want to about him. Nyah!). Come listen to Morgan, Erik, and Andrew try to school each other on what makes a good Bond film. |
152. MC_026: Role Models http://feedproxy.google.com/~r... download (audio/mpeg, 23.83Mb) Description: Join Andrew, Morgan, Ren, and me (Erik) as we discuss Role Models -- easily the best comedy we've seen since Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Danny (Paul Rudd) and Wheeler (Sean Michael Scott) are sentenced to community service, in which they have to be a mentor to a child (one of which is Superbad's "McLovin"). |
153. MC_025: Zack & Miri, Changeling, What Just Happened http://feedproxy.google.com/~r... download (audio/mpeg, 29.51Mb) Description: Got a triple-header for you this week. Andrew reviews What Just Happened, then Erik covers Changeling, then both discuss the controversial Zack & Miri Make a Porno. |
154. MC_024: Max Payne http://feedproxy.google.com/~r... download (audio/mpeg, 23.52Mb) Description: There's nothing I can say that won't detract from this awesome shred-fest by Andrew and special guest Morgan (The (Hide and) Seeker). From the sounds of this review, this could be the worst film of the year. It sounds like another Ultraviolet. In that way, I'm sorry I didn't see it. Sounds like it would have been fun to tear apart. Even if you didn't see the film, you should check out this review. Morgan and Andrew truly know how to shred a film. |
155. MC_023: Quarantine http://feedproxy.google.com/~r... download (audio/mpeg, 14.93Mb) Description: Andrew, Ren and Erik take a look at Quarantine, this year's non-franchise Halloween horror movie. Done from a first-person point of view, much like Blair Witch Project and Cloverfield, this film follows a news reporter as she tags along with the fire department to an apartment building. It's basically yet-another-zombie film, but it's handled far better than most and much like with 28 Days Later, it treats the zombie situation realistically. That's all fine and dandy, but was it any good? Listen and find out! |
156. MC_022: Current Releases http://feedproxy.google.com/~r... download (audio/mpeg, 19.45Mb) Description: We've got two episodes for you this week. In this first episode, we cover several of the mainstream films currently available in theaters. In the next show, we'll have a full-length review of Quarrantine. In this episode of MovieChatter, we review... Beverly Hills Chihuahua Nick & Nora's Infinite Playlist Righteous Kill Sex Drive Eagle Eye Body of Lies Religulous |

157. MC_021: 2008 Summer Movie Review http://feedproxy.google.com/~r... download (audio/mpeg, 18.16Mb) Description: Erik, Andrew and Ren review the best and worst of the summer's films. Best Film: Dark Knight, Iron Man, or WALL-E? Best Comedy: Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Get Smart, or Tropic Thunder? Worst Film: Indiana Jones 4, Mummy 3, Hellboy 2, or Disaster Movie? Biggest Surprises: Hellboy 2, Indiana Jones 4, Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, Wanted, Kung-Fu Panda, X-Files Movies We Wish We'd Seen: Prince Caspian, Step Brothers, Pineapple Express, Death Race Comparison to 2006, 2007. |
158. MC_020: Disaster Movie http://feedproxy.google.com/~r... download (audio/mpeg, 7.54Mb) Description: Andrew's calmed down a little bit since his forums post, and we briefly discuss Disaster Movie. |
159. MC_019: Top 5 Thematic Sci-Fi http://feedproxy.google.com/~r... download (audio/mpeg, 13.47Mb) Description: This week we're going to try something different. We've been wanting to do some "top five" features for a while now. Things like "top five plot twists." Or "top five movie lines." Or "top five worst haircuts" (which I guess would be a "bottom five" list). So today we're going to start out easy (after all, that haircut one sounds painful). We're doing our top five thematic sci-fi films. I don't mean movies like Star Wars. We're talking movies that are trying to speak to us. Movies that make us think. Movies not by Michael Bay. ;) |
160. MC_018: Pineapple Express http://feedproxy.google.com/~r... download (audio/mpeg, 2.85Mb) Description: Andrew gives us a quick, spoiler-free review of Pineapple Express. |
161. MC_017: The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor http://feedproxy.google.com/~r... download (audio/mpeg, 20.34Mb) Description: The gloves come off as Ren and Andrew throw down over the third (or fourth?) Mummy movie. Erik sits quietly in a corner, rocking back and forth, begging the voices in his head to be silent. |
162. MC_016: Blade Runner vs. The Matrix http://feedproxy.google.com/~r... download (audio/mpeg, 24.19Mb) Description: This week we're taking a break from the theaters (though check out Andrew's review of Step Brothers). Instead, we're revisiting our "versus" series, this time with a bit of a spin. Rather than having Andrew and Erik face off over a single movie, we're debating which is better -- Blade Runner or The Matrix. |
163. MC_015: Step Brothers http://feedproxy.google.com/~r... download (audio/mpeg, 3.97Mb) Description: Check out Andrew's spoiler-free review of the new WIll Ferrell & John C. Reilly movie, Step Brothers. |
164. MC_014: The Dark Knight http://feedproxy.google.com/~r... download (audio/mpeg, 27.92Mb) Description: The biggest opening weekend in movie history. The largest midnight showing. The best IMAX opening ever. The Dark Knight broke some pretty impressive records, but was it all hype, or was there any substance? Or more specifically, was the substance deserving of the hype? We loved the movie, but we try to put some things into perspective. And yes, that means we had some complaints. But not very many. This is a hard movie to complain about. |
165. MC_012: Hellboy 2 http://feedproxy.google.com/~r... download (audio/mpeg, 23.38Mb) Description: One of us said Hellboy 2 was a lot of fun, with creative imagery, great action scenes, and enjoyable characters. One of us said Hellboy 2 was even worse than Indy 4, with caricatures rather than characters and a plot that made him go from bored to frustrated to angry. As you can imagine, it was a fun show to record. With this episode, we're going back to a format we used long ago, where we start by giving a quick spoiler-free review, and then (with warning) enter into a longer spoiler-filled discussion. Rather than merely doing reviews, we want to facilitate discussion about films. |
166. MC_013: Shoot 'Em Up (Erik vs. Andrew) http://feedproxy.google.com/~r... download (audio/mpeg, 16.62Mb) Description: Welcome to our new "Versus" series! Andrew loves Shoot 'Em Up. Erik hates it. Listen to them duke it out over whether this movie is awesome or sucks. (this contains spoilers) |
167. MC_011: Hancock http://feedproxy.google.com/~r... download (audio/mpeg, 10.61Mb) Description: Our Hancock review this week is short, since most of our complaints are at the end of the film, and we're trying to avoid spoilers. This movie will make a killing at the box office, and there'll be a large crowd who'll think it's great, but I think most of that is hold-over from the very enjoyable first half of the film. As much as we wanted to like it, the movie is simply not very good. Listen to find out why, then go to http://forums.randomchatter.com to participate in the movie discussion with us. |
168. MC_010: WALL-E, Wanted http://feedproxy.google.com/~r... download (audio/mpeg, 19.38Mb) Description: This week we're discussing both WALL-E and Wanted. Is WALL-E just a bunch of cute fluff, or is there anything beneath the surface? Is Wanted just an excuse to get Angelina Jolie on the big screen again, or does it have anything unique to offer? And will Andrew ever find a 2008 release he really likes? Listen to find out! |
169. MC_009: Get Smart http://feedproxy.google.com/~r... download (audio/mpeg, 16.58Mb) Description: Other than "Forgetting Sarah Marshall", there haven't been many good comedies out this year. Fortunately, we now have "Get Smart," a refreshingly good action comedy. Unless you're Andrew, that is -- he found it lame and predictable. Why does Andrew not like it? Does it live up to the hype? Are all the funny parts in the trailers? Is Steve Carrell's take on the character acceptable? Listen and find out! |
170. MC_008: The Incredible Hulk http://feedproxy.google.com/~r... download (audio/mpeg, 19.09Mb) Description: So far, Marvel Studios is doing pretty well. The Incredible Hulk is not quite as good as Iron Man, yet it's one of the better comic book films in recent history. Join Andrew, Ren, and Erik as they discuss the Hulk. |
171. MC_007: Kung Fu Panda, Indiana Jones http://feedproxy.google.com/~r... download (audio/mpeg, 30.94Mb) Description: We're back! We've got a double-feature for you, as we review both Kung Fu Panda and Indiana Jones and the Sparkly Crystal Thing. I don't think I've had this much fun tearing a movie up since Ultraviolet. |
172. MC_006: Iron Man http://feedproxy.google.com/~r... download (audio/mpeg, 36.96Mb) Description: Iron Man raises the bar for comic book movies even higher than Batman Begins did. Join Andrew, Brian, Erik and Jeff as they look at this year's first big blockbuster. How was Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark? Did the film break the mold of campy comic book movies? Does it have any appeal outside of comic books and action films? And most importantly, will an Avengers film really work? |
173. MC_005: Forbidden Kingdom http://feedproxy.google.com/~r... download (audio/mpeg, 15.48Mb) Description: Wow. Andrew really didn't like Forbidden Kingdom. At all. Sure, Forbidden Kingdom dominated the box office two weekends ago, but that was apparently the result of good marketing. Andrew's review is insightful and... umm... well, passionate (I think the channeling of Dennis Leary at one point was unintentional). Did I mention he really didn't like this movie? As an added bonus, I've included Andrew's "Top 5 Kung Fu Fights" feature. He recorded this before the movie came out, but it seems fitting that the show end on a high-note. |
174. MC_004: Forgetting Sarah Marshall http://feedproxy.google.com/~r... download (audio/mpeg, 2.68Mb) Description: Forgetting Sarah Marshall has been out for about a week and a half now, but it's still one of the best movies in theaters at the moment. At least, that's my opinion. What does Andrew think? Check out today's show! |
175. MC_003: Baby Mama; Harold & Kumar 2 http://feedproxy.google.com/~r... download (audio/mpeg, 3.57Mb) Description: We've got a double-feature today, as Andrew reviews both Baby Mama and Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay. Which is the better choice this weekend? Tune in to find out! |
176. MC_002: Juno http://feedproxy.google.com/~r... download (audio/mpeg, 3.02Mb) Description: Welcome to our first "micro-cast"! Andrew reviews last week's DVD release of Juno, starring Ellen Page, Jason Bateman, and Jennifer Garner. |
177. MC_001: Street Kings http://feedproxy.google.com/~r... download (audio/mpeg, 11.11Mb) Description: By popular demand, the RandomChatter podcast is splitting off the movie reviews into its own show! Welcome to the premiere episode of MovieChatter! With MovieChatter, we'll be doing two types of shows. The first is a discussion-based format like you're used to. The other is a short "microcast" format in which we'll give five- to ten-minute-long reviews of movies. These will include new theatrical releases, new DVD releases, and even some older "Pick of the Week" DVDs. In our first episode, we cover the cop drama Street Kings, in which Keanu "Whoa" Reeves, Forest "Gump" Whitaker, Chris "Flame On" Evans, and Hugh "Real Actor" Laurie read from a script written by a high-schooler. At least, that's how it seemed to us... |
