The Summer movie season is creeping over America as we speak! That means it's time for another comic book movie discussion as the horrendous X-Men: Apocalypse hits theaters this Friday. We discuss the latest entry into the endless X-Men saga as well as Shane Black's fantastic new pulp-comedy The Nice Guys and the lackluster Seth Rogen comedy Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising. Then it's time to kick off a brand new Directors Series on Terrence Malick, starting with his debut film, 1973's Badlands starring Martin Sheen and Sissy Spaceck.

The Marvel machine spit out another hit this past weekend with Captain America: Civil War, the latest chapter in the Avengers saga. We discuss whether the film lives up to its namesake predecessor - 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier - or is it more in line with the disappointing Avengers: Age of Ultron? Then we wrap up our Spike Lee Directors Series with a discussion about his 2002 post-9/11 film 25th Hour. As always, we throw out our latest movie recommendations before calling it a day.

On this episode we run through the gauntlet of new trailers that dropped over the past few days and live to tell the tale! Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Suicide Squad, and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them are some of the most highly anticipated films of 2016 and we got our first real taste of what to expect. We weigh in on each trailer and then move on to something completely different: Spike Lee's 1992 epic biopic Malcolm X! Is the film worthy of its 200 minute running time? We'll be the judge! Ladies and gentlemen, the day of reckoning has come: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is out and the general consensus is that it stinks like a skunk! That doesn't mean we don't spend a half hour going over why it was bad, what could have saved it, and whether or not Jesse Eisenberg kills it in his role as Lex Luthor (he does not). Then we fire up the oven for a brand new Directors Series on Spike Lee, starting with his 1989 masterpiece Do the Right Thing. Who could ever resist listening to what three white men have to say about one of the best depictions of race relations in film history?

Two recent films came out that surprised us in very different ways. First up is Creed, the seventh installment in the Rocky franchise, and a film that did very little for us as far as the trailers were concerned. We discuss what makes it not just a great Rocky movie, but one of the best films of the year. Next is Alejandro González Iñárritu's new film The Revenant in which Leonardo DiCaprio may or may not be sexually assaulted by a bear (spoiler: he is not). With such high expectations, it's easy for a film to disappoint, but that disappointment rarely feels as painful as it does with The Revenant. We sink our teeth into the film's soft underbelly and rip it to pieces. Then it's time to wrap up our Billy Wilder Directors Series with a discussion about his 1960 classic dramedy The Apartment. And as always, we send you to bed (or work) with our latest movie recommendations.

Netflix has strategically (and successfully) changed the way we watch movies and television. Some people fully embrace this new frontier of couch potadom, while others oppose it with fiery passion as there's certainly not anything bigger to worry about. We discuss this phenomenon and what it means for the future of streaming entertainment. Then we take a trip back in time to 1950 with a discussion on Billy Wilder's Sunset Boulevard as part of our ongoing Billy Wilder Directors Series. James Bond is back in the new film Spectre! This time around 007 has a license to disappoint and we get to the bottom of why this new Bond film has left critics and audiences shaken rather than stirred, and so on (more terrible humor lies in this very episode). We also discuss two new films set in the 1950s that feature wonderful performances from their respective actresses: Brooklyn starring Saoirse Ronan and Carol, starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. While the films share the same time period, they remain tonal opposites in all regards and we compare and contrast them accordingly. Then we begin our new Director Series on the great Billy Wilder with an in depth discussion about his 1944 noir classic, Double Indemnity. Finally, we give you our movie (and TV) recommendations before we tie ourselves to the railroad tracks and cash in on the life insurance we purchased with our Patreon money.

We get ready for the long September, a month where moviegoers are more preoccupied with going back to college, attending PTA meetings and packing bologna sandwiches for their kids than they are actually going to the movies. Fortunately we have a great new indie release from director Noah Baumbach to bridge the gap between the blockbuster and prestige seasons. We discuss Mistress America starring Greta Gerwig and then daringly reach into the Cut Print Film Mailbag to read a very flattering letter. Description:

The big news out of D23 (The Walt Disney Company's expo designed to perpetuate fevered hype) is that there are a lot of animated sequels on the horizon for films you probably already love or tolerate or any have some kind of opinion of between those two extremes. Never hate though... no one is allowed to hate a Disney film, lest they be sent to the official Disney torture chamber, AKA the part of Epcot Center without all the international alcohol choices. Sequels! Do we want 'em? Do we hate 'em? We get to the bottom of things. Then it's time to press play on a brand spankin' new Directors Series as we fix our gaze on the films of Michael Haneke. Then it's time to wrap up our Directors Series on Michael Mann with his 1999 investigative journalism drama, The Insider. After a word from our new sponsor, Audible, we take another mouth-watering bite out of our Michael Mannwhich Directors Series by discussing 1992's epic action-romance, The Last of the Mohicans. Does Mann still deliver when he steps outside his crime-drama comfort zone? And more importantly, are there truly no remaining Mohicans left? Find the answers to one of those questions and  get a heaping spoonful of movie recommendations at the end of the show.

Also released this week was A24's new existential sci-fi feature, Ex Machina. The film stars newcomer Alicia Vikander as well as Cut Print Film heartthrob du jour, Oscar Isaac. We ponder the limits of humanity and ask, "Are we human or are we dancer?" The answer will shock everyone. http://cutprintfilm.libsyn.com... download (audio/mpeg, 66.22Mb)

Description:

We delve into the realm of cerebral confusion this week on the podcast as we discuss Clouds of Sils Maria. The film stars Juliette Binoche as an aging actress who must confront the inevitability of time and also stars Kristen Stewart who continues her streak of excellent performances (coming off the Oscar winning Still Alice). We then take a swim in Ryan Gosling's flawed-but-ambitious Lost River, a film with a troubled post-production timeline and a lukewarm critical reception. A new Directors Series finds us tackling the films of Japanese auteur Akira Kurosawa, starting with his 1950 film Rashomon. We give our conflicting versions of the truth when discussing the film and leave it to you to sort things out. Just kidding, we leave nothing to the imagination on how we felt about the film. As always, we wrap things up with our Weekly Movie Recommendations.

http://cutprintfilm.libsyn.com... download (audio/mpeg, 70.94Mb)

Description:

This week the Cut Print Film Podcast is broadcasting from the back seat of a fast car that goes vroom! No, we're safe and sound in our studio, but we are talking about the latest installment of the Fast & the Furious saga, Furious 7. Does the film improve upon the previous six? Are the explosions bigger and louder? Do the cars go faster than ever? And most importantly, how does Furious 7  hold up as a metaphor for our patriarchal, testosterone-fueled society? Just kidding, let's hear those cars go vroom again! After all that nonsense, we wrap up our David Lynch Directors Series with a discussion on his 2001 dream-haze masterpiece, Mulholland Drive. Were we left spellbound by the film's obtuse narrative or did we turn it off mid-way and pop in an HD-DVD copy of The Fast & the Furious: Tokyo Drift? Laugh at our irreverent jokes all over again and revel in our spot-on assessments of some of the finest films ever released (Mortdecai). 73. CutPrintFilm: Episode 54 // Kumiko the Treasure Hunter, Spring, Blue Velvet
http://cutprintfilm.libsyn.com... download (audio/mpeg, 65.58Mb)

Description:

Spring has sprung but we're not quite out of the woods when it comes to bland-to-terrible Hollywood offerings (The Divergent Series: Insurgent, we're looking at you).  Fortunately, we live in an age where independent films are more freely available than ever before which means there's a respite to the slop playing at the multiplex.  This week we're discussing two of the best films of the year so far that just so happen to have been released by small, indie studios with no star power to speak of - Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter and Spring.  After that we get out our anesthesia inhalers, take a deep breath, and discuss David Lynch's sexy, twisted murder-mystery, Blue Velvet as part two of our David Lynch Directors Series. Once the blood has been mopped up we hand out our Weekly Movie Recommendations and call it a day.

http://cutprintfilm.libsyn.com... download (audio/mpeg, 75.91Mb)

Description:

In case you haven't heard the good news, Adam Sandler has a new, terrible film out called The Cobbler and our very own Chris Evangelista has some strong opinions on the matter. With indie horror on the rise thanks to director Ti West's low budget/high tension films and last year's critically acclaimed The Babadook, we take a look at the micro-genre and discuss this week's wide release of It Follows. After all that spooky talk, we kick off our Director's Series on the surreal films of David Lynch by discussing one of his most accessible films, The Elephant Man. Marvel as we link our trunks and tails and walk in a circle for your entertainment. As if all that weren't enough, we find the time to give out our Weekly Movie Recommendations before lying down for a permanent sleep.  Just kidding! We'll see you all next week!

http://cutprintfilm.libsyn.com... download (audio/mpeg, 74.20Mb)

Description:

The month of March arrives with cold temperatures, unforgiving snow, and two horrendous new movie releases in Chappie and Unfinished Business.  We discuss Neill Blomkamp's new sci-fi misfire and what it means to truly be Chappie before tackling Vince Vaughn's new culturally tone deaf new road trip comedy, the aforementioned Unfinished Business.  Then we wash our hands of all that swill and finish off our Kathryn Bigelow Director's Series in grand fashion with her 2012 politics-of-war film, Zero Dark Thirty.  Does the film live up to the high expectations of the last film in this series, Strange Days? Yes, it does.  Strange Days was a terrible movie. Find out what we thought of the film and then take our hands as we guide you through the week with our Weekly Movie Recommendations.

76. CutPrintFilm: Episode 51 // The Lazarus Effect, Focus, Strange Days
http://cutprintfilm.libsyn.com... download (audio/mpeg, 68.63Mb)

Description:

We're comparing and contrasting two new films that opened this past weekend:  Focus, the Will Smith-fueled conman drama and The Lazarus Effect, the budget-conscious PG-13 horror film starring Olivia Wilde.  Surprisingly, there are few surprises!  Will Smith charms his way through Focus while The Lazarus Effect fails to have much of an effect at all aside from persuading audiences to avoid it in droves.  Then we jack into Kathryn Bigelow's 1995 cyber-punk nightmare (based off a dream James Cameron had in the 80s), Strange Days.  How strange are these days?  Let me put it this way: Tom Sizemore has his wig ripped off and no one bats an eyelash!  As if all this weren't enough, we leave you with our Weekly Movie Recommendations to see you through another week.

http://cutprintfilm.libsyn.com... download (audio/mpeg, 68.99Mb)

Description:

Oh my!  The 87th Academy Awards have come and gone and we're here picking up the pieces of everyone's broken hearts.  That is, if you aren't involved with Birdman, Whiplash, or The Grand Budapest Hotel.  Or if you aren't Julianne Moore.  You know what, it was a great night for films that actually deserved to be awarded.  Of course, the Oscars wouldn't be the Oscars without some nonsense and unbelievably low low points.  Neil Patrick Harris did his best to shine up the dreadfully humorless material he was given but to not much avail.  Come listen to our reactions to the Oscars winners, losers, musical performances and much more on this week's episode.  As always, we give you our Weekly Movie Recommendations to see you through the cold, dark night.

It was a huge R-Rated Valentine's Day weekend at the box office as the BDSM phenomenon Fifty Shades of Grey was released to the tune of $90 million!  The hyper-violent Kingsman: The Secret Service also came out this weekend with a healthy box office take of $41 million.  After discussing these unlikely wintertime hits, we look toward next week's Oscars ceremony and give our predictions for who will win as well as our personal picks for who should win.  In the end, the real winner is you, the listener!  Then we start a brand new Director's Series featuring the films of Kathryn Bigelow.  In this first installment we're discussing her surf-heist action film Point Break starring Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze.  Did we find the film radical or did we pray for a tidal wave to snap our necks after watching?  You'll have to tune in and find out.  Naturally, we wouldn't leave you high and dry without signing off with our Weekly Movie Recommendations.

Bad news everyone; it's February!  That means we're smack-dap in the middle of bad movie season.  To celebrate, we're discussing Jupiter Ascending, the new sci-fi space-fantasy epic starring Mila Kunis as a janitor-turned-queen of the cosmos and Channing Tatum as an dog-man creature thing.  With characters like that at your film's core, what could possible go wrong?  After we recover, we wrap up our Robert Altman Director's Series with a discussion about his 1985 film Fool for Love, based on the play by Sam Shepard.  Did we fall head over heels for the film or did we hop in our trucks and drive 3,000 miles just to escape our Fool for Love DVD?  Listen to find out and as an added bonus, we've thrown in our picks for our weekly movie recommendations!  What more could you ask for?

The Sundance Film Festival has come and gone and with it comes a brand new batch of independent films that were snatched up by the studios.  We go over some of the films coming out of Sundance that we're looking forward to seeing in the near (and not so near) future.  In other news, the all-female cast for the Ghostbusters reboot has been announced and we weigh in with our thoughts.  Finally, we discuss the 1973 neo-noir film The Long Goodbye as part of our ongoing Director's Series on the genrebusting Robert Altman.  Does his deconstruction of the 50's detective story charm the pants off of us or does it leave us out in the rain?  Who knows?  (We do).  And as always, we leave you with our Weekly Movie Recommendations to get you through the week.

Description:

With January comes a slew of horrendous movies the studios typically try to sweep under the carpet.  That's not the case for the new Johnny Depp film Mortdecai, which barges into theaters this week with trumpets blasting.  The aggressive promotional campaign for this film neglects to point out that it is, indeed, a piece of crap.  We'll tell you all about it!  Then it's time to start a brand new installment of our Director Series, this time focusing on Robert Altman.  We discuss his 1971 anti-Western, McCabe & Mrs. Miller starring Warren Beatty and Julie Christie.  And in case you were wondering, we'd never leave you without our picks for Weekly Movie Recommmendations.

http://cutprintfilm.libsyn.com... download (audio/mpeg, 63.78Mb)

Two of 2014's best films got wide releases this week: Paul Thomas Anderson's adaptation of Thomas Pynchon's drug fueled detective tale Inherent Vice and director Ava DuVernay's Selma which tells the story of Martin Luther King Jr's historic march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama in order to secure black citizens the right to vote.  Both films take place within a five year span of one another but other than that there are no similarities and we're not just talking about true life versus fiction.  We discuss each film in depth, touching on the highs and lows and whether they ultimately achieve the goals set before them.  As always, we conclude this episode with our picks for Weekly Movie Recommendations.

Description:

We start 2015 off with a figurative bang as we devote the entire episode to discussing Stanley Kubrick's 1956 film noir, The Killing.  This black and white pulp classic solidified Kubrick as a director to watch and earned him comparisons to the great Orson Welles despite the film's lackluster performance at the box office.  We do our best to unravel the tightly wound heist film in an attempt to figure out its inner workings and what makes it feel so contemporary despite being made nearly 60 years ago.  Once the dust clears, we give you our Weekly Movie Recommendations to get you through the week.

Tired of the same old action thriller garbage you've seen time and time again?  Too bad!  Denzel Washington stars in The Equalizer, a film that Chris did not enjoy one bit of.  On the other hand, The Boxtrolls captured Dave's heart with its charming stop-motion animation and fully realized characters.  Speaking of satisfying characters, this week finds us starting our three episode director retrospective on Roman Polanski.  In this episode we're discussing his feature film debut, Knife in the Water.  After an incredibly intellectual conversation about the symbolism and themes of Knife in the Water, we play a ridiculous game based on the IMDb Parents Guide section.  As always, we end the show with our Weekly Movie Recommendations.

98. CutPrintFilm: Episode 30 // Tusk, The Guest, The Maze Runner, eXistenZ
http://cutprintfilm.libsyn.com... download (audio/mpeg, 71.40Mb)

Description:

In this week's jam packed episode we talk about Kevin Smith's absurd spectacle Tusk and why you should see it.  Then we all go gaga over Dan Stevens' dreamy performance in the new retro thriller The Guest.  Dave went and saw The Maze Runner and ended up enjoying himself (for the most part).  Of course, all of these good vibes are flushed down the toilet when it comes time to tackle the third film in our David Cronenberg retrospective: eXistenZ.  The film ends up being just as terrible as its title's spelling and we give it a well deserved beating.  As always, we end the show with our Weekly Movie Recommendations and manage to pull out of the nosedive that is eXistenZ.

24:33 - The Maze Runner

http://cutprintfilm.libsyn.com... download (audio/mpeg, 66.43Mb)

Description:

Despite an abysmal class of opening films for the first week of September, Wetlands manages to shine with its endearing gross out take on the coming-of-age comedy.  This week is also part one of our three part David Cronenberg director retrospective.  In this episode we have a SPOILER filled discussion about his 1983 information age prophetic masterpiece, Videodrome.  All that, plus our Weekly Movie Recommendations lie behind your screen.  *organ music plays dramatically*
