Also in this episode, we talk a little about the new poll feature and clarify our use of the term 'classic'.

130. FYC Podcast Episode 11: Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs (1937)

Leave it to the FYC crew to step up and ask the hard questions on the film commentary podcast that's as good as dapple lumplings. Er, lumple dapplings. Crapple dumpkins? Never mind.

131. FYC Podcast Episode 10: Duck Soup (1933)
http://fycshow.libsyn.com/epis... download (audio/mpeg, 27.80Mb)

Description:

"Why a four-year-old child could understand this report. Run out and find me a four-year-old child. I can't make head or tail out of it."

Welcome back for another fun-filled episode of FYC. Since our schedule did not allow this week for an April Fool's Day release we decided to celebrate, if only in spirit, by embracing the day and looking at one of the very few comedies featured on the best-of-the-best lists, Duck Soup. The 1933 farce features the four Marx Brothers in their last film together as a quartet as well as their last film released by Paramount Pictures. In it they play characters belonging to two separate nations on the brink of war; Groucho and Zeppo as part of Freedonia and Chico and Harpo as spies for the neighbouring country of Sylvania. Widely considered by critics to be a masterpiece, Dustin and Mike do their usual persnickety job of putting popular consensus to the test and judging if a movie looks like a classic, and is treated as a classic, is it, in fact, a classic?

132. FYC Podcast Episode 09: The Graduate (1967)
http://fycshow.libsyn.com/epis... download (audio/mpeg, 33.12Mb)

Description:

"Mrs. Robinson, if you don't mind my saying so, this conversation is getting a little strange."

This week we have a conversation about Mike Nichols' groundbreaking 1967 comedy-drama, The Graduate. This anthem to awkward sex and disenfranchised youth features a slightly too old Dustin Hoffman playing the young Benjamin Braddock returning home from college feeling lost, directionless, and haplessly falling into an affair with Mrs. Robinson, played by the slightly older than Hoffman, Anne Bancroft. Listen in as hosts Mike and Dustin take to the roundtable and wrestle with the big questions like does Ben actually love Elaine or is she just another MacGuffin in his selfish and directionless life? What were Ben's four years of college for? Does the film rate to be included as one of the greatest of all time? Would Ben have been better off just going into plastics?

133. FYC Podcast Episode 08: Goodfellas (1990)
http://traffic.libsyn.com/fycs... download (audio/mpeg, 33.91Mb)

Description:

"As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster."

On this week's episode, Mike and Dustin go deep undercover and take on the mob as they discuss Martin Scorsese's 1990 gangster epic, Goodfellas. It's the story of Henry Hill who spent his entire life trying to become a made man but when things start to spiral out of control he finds the only way out is to turn on the people and the life he has always wanted to be a part of. Helping our esteemed hosts out with this interrogation is FYC's very first guest snitch, Sarah Van Tassel, who brings a fresh and welcome set of eyes to the proceedings. So settle in, give it a listen, and see if being a gangster really is better than being the president of the United States.

134. FYC Podcast Episode 07: The Sixth Sense (1999)
http://fycshow.libsyn.com/epis... download (audio/mpeg, 24.75Mb)

Description:
"They just want help, even the scary ones."

Things take a supernatural turn this week on the show as we look in on the spirit world and M. Night Shyamalan's most loved film, The Sixth Sense. It wowed audiences in 1999 with it's famous twist ending but does the movie really hold up under careful scrutiny and should it be classified as a true classic? Dustin and Mike waste no time asking the hard questions, peeling back the layers and putting the film's internal logic, and controversial writer/director, to the test.

http://traffic.libsyn.com/fycs... download (audio/mpeg, 34.80Mb)

Description:

"Any man don't wanna get killed...better clear on out the back."

On this week's episode Dustin and Mike sit down to talk about Clint Eastwood's morally acute meditation on violence and redemption, and his last word on the western genre, Unforgiven. It's the story of William Munny and Ned Logan who aint bad men no more, they're just quiet farmers trying to make their way in the world. But after Munny is faced with a difficult choice they set out on one more fateful job as hired guns to make a little money and kill some men they guess probably got it comin'. Download the show, listen to the discussion, and see if the film gets the judgment it deserves.

136. FYC Podcast Episode 05: To Kill a Mockingbird (1962)
http://traffic.libsyn.com/fycs... download (audio/mpeg, 30.22Mb)

Description:
"There's a lot of ugly things in this world, son. I wish I could keep 'em all away from you. That's never possible."

Last week we lost Pulitzer Prize winning author, Harper Lee, who died of a stroke at the age of 89. For over 30 years she unprecedently had only one published novel to her name and it is one of my, and the literary world's, favourite books, To Kill a Mockingbird. As a tribute to Ms. Lee and her work we felt it would be a good idea to tackle the 1962 adaptation of her book on this week's show and see if we can't come to an agreement by mutual consent as to whether or not the film should be considered a classic. So, join us as Dustin and Mike take a trip to the tired old town of Maycomb, spend some quality time with the Finch's, catch up with the trial of Tom Robinson, and try to remember that it's a sin to kill a mockingbird.

Fifteen miles from paradise lies the City of God and it is divided. Anyone living in the Rio de Janeiro slum is considered a hoodlum and life is violent and cheap. In this podcast based on a true story your hosts, Mike and Dustin, infiltrate a gang war between two rival crime lords to record a podcast and tell a story the world needs to hear. Will the 2002 critically acclaimed crime-drama, City of God, cut the classic mustard? Check out the show and let us know what you thought of the final verdict.

Description:

The very first episode! More of a proto-episode, actually, since no actual movies are discussed, but Dustin and Mike do take a little time to introduce themselves, break down the For Your Consideration mission statement, and get the ball rolling.

In this short intro podcast we talk a little about the origins of the show, what we hope to accomplish with it, and what our criteria will be as we go forward, watching and analyzing these classic films to see if they really do warrant inclusion on the 'greatest films of all time' lists.
