3. Life and Leadership with Brigadier General (R) Maureen LeBoeuf
http://milmoneymovement.libsyn... download (audio/mpeg, 26.02Mb)

Description:

The military community is well aware that good leadership is important in your career. But leadership applies to so many parts of your daily life. The impacts of leadership good or bad can have lasting effects on a person.

From my experience in the military and as a financial coach, I know how valuable positive leadership is in life and money. I’m excited to share my talk with my guest today, Maureen LeBoeuf.

Maureen and I met by chance at a book launch in New York City a couple of years ago. It was for her niece, Erin Lowry, Author of Broke Millennial and Broke Millennial Takes on Investing. It was there I learned about Maureen’s amazing military career. So when I found out she wrote a book, I knew I had to have her on.

Brigadier General (Retired) Maureen LeBoeuf served 28 years in the U.S. Army. During her career, she held various staff and leadership positions as well as flying UH-1 helicopters in the continental United States and Europe.  Most noteworthy was her assignment as the Professor and Head of the Department of Physical Education at the United States Military Academy at West Point from 1997 until her retirement in 2004.  Her position carried the unique title “Master of the Sword.” She was the first woman department head at the United States Military Academy since it was founded in 1802.

LeBoeuf is currently the Chair of the USO of North Carolina. She is currently serving as a senior advisor and faculty member with the Thayer Leader Development Group at West Point.

In this episode, Maureen shares her stories of leadership in the military to include her time at West Point, the lasting impacts of leadership, how to apply leadership in your life and money plus her money words of wisdom for active-duty Service members.

4. Look in the Mirror if you Want Financial Success
http://milmoneymovement.libsyn... download (audio/mpeg, 9.97Mb)

Description:

Today is a solo episode because I want to talk about something that has been a frequent topic of discussion recently on my coaching calls. And that’s self-accountability. It’s essential to be aware of who you are to get to where you want to be in life. What you value, what makes you tick, what you’re passionate about, what brings you joy, and what you don’t like are all things to consider.

Ignoring or not taking into consideration what’s already established about yourself leads to unhappiness, discontent, and problems.

On the other hand, knowing yourself, well, helps you make decisions that have a positive impact on your life and finances. And ultimately help you reach your goals.

Today I want to talk about how to understand yourself and apply that knowledge to improve your financial life.

http://milmoneymovement.libsyn... download (audio/mpeg, 28.56Mb)

Description:

This topic is near and dear to my heart because I 100% understand the frustrations of employment as a military spouse. It was a struggle for me to work in the financial services industry in the midst of deployments, long TDYs and PCSing. Or that you have to come in 30 minutes later than everyone else for work because you have no one, not a spouse, friend or family member to get your kids to school because you have just arrived at a new duty location.

In this episode we discuss:

What Spouseforce is and how does it work Who can us Spouseforce The need for this program Costs Spouseforce sign up Experience requirements for the program Training provided Volunteer Work Can people/companies search

34. How to You Can Transition from the Military and Live Your Dreams
http://milmoneymovement.libsyn... download (audio/mpeg, 35.04Mb)

Description:

In this week's episode of the MilMoney Movement Podcast, co-hosts Lacey Langford and Hank Coleman talk with special guest, Daniel Knopp. Daniel recently transitioned from active duty Air Force to an eight-month sabbatical in an RV touring the country. Now, he is poised to start the second career that he always dreamed of being a financial planner.

We also touch on the sensitive subject of the death of Daniel’s first wife. We talk about how he has turned that tragedy into a positive by helping others with estate planning, navigating the Family Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance (FSGLI) life insurance plan, and living his dream by starting his own financial planning practice in the near future. We discuss how collecting the FSGLI benefit actually works and what others might expect out of the process.

Daniel and his wife had the tough conversations early in life as her health was failing. And, she encouraged him to continue pursuing his dreams of leaving the military, traveling, and staring his own Registered Investment Advisor (RIA) business as a financial planner and advisor.

It’s an inspiring story that you won’t want to miss. Money is just a tool to help you accomplish your goals and live out your dreams doing what matters the most to you. And, shows us first hand how to take a tragedic situation and use it as inspiration to help others.

35. How to Conquer the Challenges You Face When Leaving the Military
http://milmoneymovement.libsyn... download (audio/mpeg, 31.06Mb)

Description:

Are you ready to separate or retire from military service? The transition out of military service isn’t something that should be taken lightly or put off until the last minute.

In this episode of MilMoney Movement podcast, Hank Coleman and Lacey Langford talk with Mike Kelly, Assistant Vice President of Military Advocacy at USAA, about many of the challenges Service members and their spouses face when leaving the military. Mike also shares some of the initiatives USAA has taken to help milspouses with un and underemployment.

No matter how many years you have left in, there needs to be some type of planning for your separation or retirement from service. In this episode we discuss:

Separation challenges

Some of the challenges Service members face when separating are long transition times, difficulty finding a job, not having the proper certifications, changes in finances and education challenges.

Separation preparation timeframe

You should allow at least 2 years to prepare for your separation from the military.

Loss of benefits

The of benefits can be a shock to your finances when leaving the military. Remembering to budget for increases in health care, life insurance, dental, housing, and taxes can help your finances on track.

Relocation after service

Many Service members and their spouses do not intend to stay in the local area of their last duty station. If you’ve haven’t done proper planning it could mean staying in an area you don’t like.

Impact of military separation on milspouses

Separation from the military doesn’t just affect the Service member. Military spouses face many of the same challenges as the separating member.

Veteran and milspouse unemployment initiatives

Great improvements have been made to reduce veteran unemployment. Now the spotlight is shifting to help military spouses with un and underemployment.

Game Time

This week for Game Time we play a new game, PCS Team-Up or Tag Out.

36. Everything You Need to Know About Investing in the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP)
http://milmoneymovement.libsyn... download (audio/mpeg, 24.26Mb)

Description:

You need to save for your retirement. Your military pension will not be enough to sustain you through all of your retirement years. The Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) is a benefit provided by the Department of Defense (DoD) to help you save money for your golden years.

Today, we have a special episode of the MilMoney Movement podcast. Hank Coleman and Lacey Langford break down everything you need to know about the TSP to help you start investing and saving for your retirement. Here’s a preview of what we cover in this special episode.

What is the TSP

The TSP is a retirement saving account for military service members and federal employees. It is similar to a civilian 401k.

Defined contribution vs defined benefit plans

The TSP is a defined contribution plan which means you make contributions from your pay to your TSP account to save money for retirement. The military’s retirement or pension is a defined benefit plan. A defined benefit is when you complete some time retirement, for the military it’s 20 years, after that you continue to receive monthly payments as if you were still working.

Matching in tax-advantaged plans

To receive matching contributions from the DoD you must be in the Blended Retirement System. There are no matching contributions from the DoD for Service members in the Legacy System.

Contributions limits

Currently, you’re able to contribute $18,500 to your Thrift Savings Plan. If you’re over 50, you can give an additional $5,000 each year. A great way to grow your retirement is to increase your savings each time your income increases.

Roth vs Traditional Thrift Savings Plan

The Roth and Traditional TSP are different tax treatments for your retirement savings account. The Traditional means you will pay taxes on your contributions and earnings when you take the money out in retirement. The Roth version of the TSP means you pay taxes on your contributions as you earn them and your earnings will be tax-free when you take the money out.

TSP Funds

There are five different funds, the G, F, S, C and I funds. They also have lifecycle funds you can select.

Getting Help

Blooom is a resource you can use to manage your TSP. They will optimize your 401k in minutes and give you access to a financial advisor.

TSP Loans

You may be eligible to take a loan from your account but serious consideration should be taken before making that decision. Borrowing money from your retirement accounts can have a negative effect on your retirement income.

Withdrawals after leaving service

You are not able to take money from your account until you are 59 and ½ without taxes and penalties. When you do decide to start drawing on your TSP you can either do a partial or full withdrawal.

Learn more about what you need to know about the TSP in this episode of the MilMoney Movement podcast.

What's on Lacey's Mind

This week it’s on should you retire early, even if you can.
