Summary:   

It's been a while since we've put out a show but this is a good one.  Teddy Ballgame and CLuke put me in touch with Erick Robertson who is a programmer who has created an online fantasy baseball "universe".  I took the time to create a login at Sim Yard and it looks pretty interesting.  It allows people to create teams of players and and build franchises.  It's a brand new project so we thought we get Erick on the show to talk about it. 

Using the best marketing tool out there, viral marketing, Sim Yard lets people play for free for as long as they want.  Of course, if you want to build a franchise, the subscription route is the way to go.  Erick explains that Sim Yard is not just about winning the game but also developing your ballclub and increasing your franchise revenue.  

While we were emailing each other about logistics, Erick told me he had the chance to watch more than a few baseball games while in Japan.  Not only that, he took part in one of Hanshin Tigers' cheerleading organizations.  So I couldn't pass up the chance to ask Erick about his experience with Japanese baseball from a fan's perspective. 

Finally, Erick is a Cubs fan so we  wrap up the show trying not to get too giddy about the Cubs' latest successes.

Summary:   Alan Nathan is a professor of physics at the University of Illinois who lectures often on the physics of baseball.  During our interview with Alan, we cover the effects of spin on the flight of the baseball, wood versus aluminum bats,  and "Is there such a thing as a rising fastball?".  

Definitely, take a listen to our interview with Alan as he has a unique way of looking at the game.  Afterwards, swing on by his website entitled The Physics of Baseball.  There's a plethora of info related to his field. 

At the end of the show, Alan mentioned that MLB was making a lot of data from Gameday available to the public.  Alan provided me this link to an article on Friar Watch which explains how to access the data and how to use it.

Summary:  We touch on a variety of issues including the All-Star Game, vintage baseball, Tom's 1979 APBA replay, the upcoming APBA convention and the woes of the Chicago White Sox.

As we said during the show, sometime co-host Shawn Lee is busy with the vintage base ball team, Vermilion Voles.  For a couple years, he's been the webmaster for them so check out their website. 

This year, he's picking up the bat and playing on the team.  Shawn said he couldn't make the show because the Voles had a game.  Later, he reported back and said the Voles split their double header.  Interestingly, the team they played are from my hometown, the Urbana Boneyards. 

Here is the link to Tom's 1979 APBA National League replay that we talked about during the show.  Much credit goes to my friend Brando who was responsible for the NL West.  As I said, we only got as far as July 26 but enjoy anyway.

For part one of the show, Tom and Todd discuss Dice-K, the Pirates inability to make any good offseason moves and whether the Cubs' Felix Pie will be ready for 2007.

We interview Shawn Roof for the second half of the show. Roof, a senior, is the starting shortstop for the University of Illinois Fighting Illini. In 2006, he was third team All Big Ten and in 2005, he was an All-Star for the Coastal Plain League. He is the son of former professional baseball player and coach, Gene Roof.

During the interview, Roof talks about the Fighting Illini's chances in 2007, growing up around baseball and what gives him the hustle and 'go get 'em' attitude that he has.
