4. RoughMix 053 - Dashboard Smack (Archive) http://roughmix01.podOmatic.co... download (, 0.00Mb) Description: RoughMix 053 - Dashboard Smack Originally posted June 02, 2006 11:24AM Rain and traffic jam noise. What better background for a program about songwriting! In this episode I "create" using the dashboard of the car and the Palm Tungsten recording sitting on the passenger seat beside me. I initially removed some of the noise in audacity, but the results were too tinny so put it back in to give that "you are there" feel. This episode also requests that you send in audio feedback to let me know where you are listening from. I have noticed that there are quite some subscribers from N. America, Europe and China. Where are you? Let me know at nlnnet+roughmix@gmail.com, whether by Audio note of simple text. Special greetings to friends on Crafty Drive near route 61 and those on E. Simple roughness! You can contact me at nlnnet+roughmix@gmail.com. Please visit the frappr map and let me know where in the world you are. 7. RoughMix 050 - Don't Hesitate http://roughmix01.podOmatic.co... download (, 0.00Mb) Description: Originally posted May 16, 2006 01:05PM In this "landmark" episode 50, (50 means something doesn't it?) I go back in time to what was a rough in the 80s. It is a tune I wrote called "Don't Hesitate" as I was a part of the music group "Pacific". [Use this URL to find videos on Google Video: http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=Pacific+KKR] It was recorded on a Tascam 4 track recorder which used normal audio cassettes and recorded tracks 1 and 2 on one side and 3 and 4 on the other, so that you could only play back one side 1. If you played it on side 2 it would all be reversed. Maybe one day I will release more of the stuff I did. If there is interest let me know at nlnnet+roughmix@gmail.com The person who gives the best reason for doing so will be mentioned on a future podcast, and maybe will also get a special prize. (This also shows me who actually reads the show notes.) |

It is an episode that is driven by the vocals in my mind as a songwriter. I like the tension expressed in parts of it and look forward to discovering what it can evolve into! This is another tune dropped onto the Palm Tungsten as I was hacking around. You will hear background noise which is for the most part my 4 year old daughter. As for the lyrics that came into this development it happened because I thought that the tune (which came first) sounded like a celebration, and this made me think of a birthday celebration, and then I thought about a "bigger" birthday that would have a potentially larger audience, hence the Christmas context. It is also now the time to write a Christmas tune if I want it to have play in 2006. Please add yourself to the Frappr map (http://Frappr.com/RoughMix) and let us know where you are in the world! Note: the foot picture (http://flickr.com/photos/kelleys/131268429/) is from the one responsible for the background noise.... |

I add two takes to this one with some explanation. It is like a second draft on a song that is beginning to take a more formalized form in my mind. I also am beginning to fill up my allotted space on this feed so I have created a separate feed for the earliest archives at: RoughMix01.podomatic.com. 15. RoughMix 042 - Relaxed (Archive) http://roughmix01.podOmatic.co... download (, 0.00Mb) Description: RoughMix 042 - Relaxed (Archive) Originally posted April 11, 2006 05:52AM Most Current RoughMix episodes available at http://RuffMix.com. (Subscribe) RoughMix 042 - Relaxed Two instrumental pieces. The first is a "by accident piece" as I was just hacking around a bit high up on the guitar neck, and I liked the initial progression so I made up some more. The second short snippet is a further variation on my work with the CMaj9 chord. I like the brightness of the sound and this rough has me moving into a bit more rhymthically. Both tunes were recorded on the Palm Tungsten using its built in mike, complete with background noise as the stuff was captured. Your thoughts are welcome as is Audio feedback. Best is either to Skype it to me at briankelley or to send an email to nlnnet+roughmix@gmail.com You are more than welcome to vote for the podcast at Podcast Alley or to add yourself to the Frappr site so that we know from where you are listening. |

I have taken two short clips that were recorded on my Palm Tungsten. Both were never before played and were truly recorded on the fly. If I would do more of this I am sure that my music would be better as I would have many more rough drafts to polish. I live and learn. It would be nice to hear what you think, and from musicians how you do it yourselves. Audio feedback is welcome. It is a song I wrote for my 4 year old daughter to help her go to sleep. I later did my best to capture what I did on the fly onto a more respectable form. I knew I had a hit when the very next morning I caught my daughter singing the song herself. I was clever enough to capture her version due to the trusty Palm. RoughMix with BrianKelley 20 - Walking Man (Archive) http://roughmix01.podOmatic.co... download (, 0.00Mb) Description: RoughMix with BrianKelley 20 - Walking Man (Archive) Originally posted December 28, 2005 04:49PM This episode is an extended free for all as I truly played with an idea. It is not edited and this captures what I put down as it happened. This is very often how I write music, by capturing it in a raw form and then processing it afterwards - now possible due to the technology I posssess - which has not always been the case. Please visit the Frappr site and let me know from where you are listening. My blog is available at KelleyNews.blogspot.com In this case my problem will be of retro - how do I recreate the sound without having given indication as to how I played it initially - but this is a small problem in most cases. |

The other players in this drama were also clueless as to what it really meant. This recording was the intial recording, full of mistakes, to capture the tune as it was at its inception.I here followed the rules I have stated here often. I got it down. It was recorded so that I could later edit and improve. Here the song is played live by a band that had slightly less than 1 hour to practice it and with engineering that was designed for the live audience by non-professionals who mean well and do their best, but do not have a clue as to how to mix for live music for recording. The process of developing a song in its RoughMix format can also involve others and still be very rough! Thanks to those of you who have provided feedback recently. Once I start getting audio responses (available on this site you can also record notes to me - I can begin to add some feedback.
