The Eating Diaries

People are often testing out new diets in order to maintain or lose weight, and The Masthead with Marie Claire recognizes this amongst their own team. However one important result of your diet is not only weight loss, but emotional stability, daily energy and all around health. The age old saying "you are what you eat" isn't just a wives tale. So be excited because how you feel and look can be under your control!

The Beauty Diet
In order to better understand the power of what we put in our bodies, Marie Claire tests several different diets on their team members. The Masthead's own associate editor Yael Kohen tries what is known as the Beauty Diet by nutritionist and author Lisa Drayer . Her book Beauty Diet: Looking Great has Never Been So Delicious includes research based nutrition advice to enhance your appearance, specifically what to eat for glowing skin, fuller hair, healthier nails and brighter eyes. Key ingredients in the Beauty Diet include blueberries, sweet potatoes, salmon, and low-fat yogurt, all holding important beauty nutrients.

Eating For Energy
Meredith Bryan, a writer for Marie Claire, speaks with Los Angeles based nutritionist Ashley Koff to gain insight towards an energizing diet. Not only does Koff suggest what to eat but when: every three hours to be precise, a time Koff has deemed "eating occasions". Each eating occasion you need a fat, a carb and a protein, and many foods count for two categories such as nuts which are both a fat and a protein. So instead of a carb-fest at lunch and a four o'clock crash in the afternoon, how about an avacodo and some pecans and a day filled with energy!?

The Good Mood Diet
Editorial Assistant Jihan Thompson tests a diet for stabilizing emotional health, and maintaining an even temper throughout the day. Susan Kleiner who created the Good Mood Diet gives great advice towards balancing moods through a controlled high protein diet.

Spice Up Your Place

Just because you're spending more time in the nest doesn't mean you have to tolerate it as is. "You walk into the same house every day, and you see the same stuff," says decorator Michelle Williams , who keeps Chicago's arty elite in Moroccan poufs. "Even if it just means buying bright turquoise candles for those holders you inherited from your aunt, get something in your place that makes you want to throw a party and use your last twenty to cook for your friends."

Go ahead and slash that gym membership from your monthly expenses. Celebrity trainer Ramona Braganza shares the simple, 40-minute at-home workout that got Alba and Halle Berry into fab post-baby shape. Follow her fat-burning program four times a week:

10-MINUTE CARDIO: Jog for two minutes; run hard for six; jog again for two.

STRENGTH TRAINING 1: Three rounds of 20 reps using 3-pound dumbbells.

5-MINUTE CARDIO: Alternate between 30 seconds of jogging and 30 seconds of sprinting.

Chris McMillan began an inspiring run for great hair when he gave Jennifer Aniston "the Rachel." Because of this, the Masthead with Marie Claire realized how hair styling can influence the way we look at someone and the way we fashion ourselves. Hair has the power to make or break our overall appearance, and undoubtedly, a bad hair day can completely ruin an experience. So the Masthead decided to archive 15 years of great hair, to encourage new and awesome styles and induce a confidence boost!

With the recession, hair cuts are becoming a huge trend. No longer are people coming in for blow-dries and styling. Women are depending more on a time and money-saving cut. Marie Claire call on famed stylist Chris McMillan, who shares valuable information on hair cuts that are both economical and fashion savvy. McMillan gives advice on wearable hair trends that work with varying texture, length and face structure.

Hues of the World

Many women turn to celebrities when deciding on personal style, especially when it comes to hair! The Masthead takes a deeper look into celebrities that influence hair color, and more specifically, hues from around the world .

Many American women ask for Gisele Bündchen's vivacious blonde hue while French women request Julia Roberts rouge tent. Although many tend to seek inspiration from other countries. However women in India, the UK and Lebanon are autonomous and look only to their own catwalk for fitting hair color.

Women in Comedy
The Masthead at Marie Claire has decided it's time to take a close look at women in comedy . Amy Poehler 's current lead role in the new sitcom Parks and Recreation sparked an entire Marie Claire feature on the funny ladies of late like Tina Fey and Kathy Griffin , along with the women who laid a beginning foundation in the realm of comedy such as Judy Gold , Roseanne Barr and Rosie O'Donnell .

An exclusive interview with Caroline Hirsch , the founder of famed comedy club Caroline's on Broadway (New York City), sheds light on the hay-day of standup and the rise of the female comedian. What began as a cabaret in 1982, Caroline's soon changed to comedy when they hired Jay Leno in 1983. Hirsch addresses the career of the female comic as rough, with lots of rejection, but as the women's movement has changed more women have gone into comedy and succeeded.

A powerful and groundbreaking statement for the woman comedian in the 80's made clear that beauty is of little importance, and "I'd rather be funny than beautiful". Joan Rivers rejected this however, refusing to be the ugly funny girl and still hold on to this today.

Lucy Kaylin, executive editor of Marie Claire, expresses that we are in an absolutely unprecedented era, with women at the forefront of comedy. Although we have our Ben Stillers and Andy Sambergs continually making us laugh our pants off, right up there with them are the ever-funny Tina Feys and Amy Poehlers.
