The question of who Jesus is and what he came to do is not only a question that is around today, but has been around from the day he was born. It was a question that Matthew was attempting to answer in his gospel. He quotes from the book of Isaiah to show that one aspect of Jesus' life and ministry was to bring hope to those who have been bruised or hurt by life. He brings us that hope, and we follow in his steps as those who bring that hope to a hurting world around us.

We can quote the phrase 'God is Love' but so what? What does it mean, how is it seen and how is it understood and lived out?

In the uncertain times that we are living in, it is easy to forget who is in charge and that He has a plan. It is even easy to forget the many ways He has poured out blessings upon us. The Apostle Paul begins his letter to the Ephesians reminding the Church about the amazing things God has done already in this world, even before it was created. He then looks to the future and speaks of God's promise and seal of an eternal inheritance that is awaiting believers. Come along this Sunday morning as we delve into the first chapter of the book of Ephesians.

This morning we want to look at that moment in time when everything went horribly wrong for humanity. In the midst of paradise, a seemingly harmless suggestion leads to a desire to be-come rulers of our own destiny, independent from God. But then, as now, our craving for superior knowledge and individual greatness only destroys those relationships which make us truly human.

In 2 Peter 3:18 God's people are told that they are to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. We looked at that verse in two evening services in October and November, and this morning I want to combine some of the main things that we saw in the preaching. There is still another sermon to come, focusing on yet other important truths, and I hope to deal with that in the morning service on February 12.

With all the positive sides that there are to Christmas, we must realize that not everyone was pleased with this miracle: Immanuel, God with us!
Jesus had to face persecution very soon after He was born; King Herod wanted Him out of the way. But he failed.
And Jesus continued on another 33 years of suffering and rejection, and then His earthly life came to a bitter end. What was the cause of His death? OUR SINS!
So Christmas is also a time for personal reflection.

At the slight risk of offence, it can be said that most Aussies are 'ordinary' people who have 'ordinary' jobs and 'ordinary' families. When it comes to religion - and in particular a religious celebration of Christmas - many people say: 'well, what has it got to do with me?' Doesn't religion belong to a time and date in history when it was relevant for a very different society than us? Others say: 'yes, we should hold on to our religious roots, as it is part of our heritage, but honestly, it has little bearing on how we live our lives'. This morning we will learn from some very ordinary people who came to see the true relevance of Christmas for their lives.

Recently I had a conversation with someone about evangelism. We mused on the great need of teaching Christian children how to evangelise. In the course of our conversation it felt almost as if we have lost sight of God's ability and eagerness to show himself to people who don't know him. It's almost like we don't expect or anticipate to see God bringing people to faith - it's an aspect of the kingdom of God that seems to have gone off the radar for many Christians. Why is that, we wondered? Is it because we live in a world where God is less active? Is it that our world is so far removed from God that we see fewer and fewer people turning to him? Can he really show himself to people around us whom we just cannot see coming to faith? This morning we will see how the story of three characters we usually meet in a nativity set has some great truths to tell us about the questions above.

The birth of a baby is always a moving event. We can't help but be overawed when we see new life come about. As we are entering the festive season, we stop and recognize a very special birth, that of Jesus Christ. Right from the beginning we see that this was no ordinary birth - no ordinary conception, no ordinary parents. He was truly something special. For the next few Sundays, we'll look at some of the amazing events and truths surrounding the birth of this man, Jesus Christ.

I watched my five year old daughter run a race for the first time a few months ago and it wasn't easy, I think I found it harder than she did. But life is a lot like a race, it has a starting point, it has a marked out course, and it has a goal, a finish line that we're striving for. In Hebrews 11 we see a list of those who have run before us, and the thing that unites them all is faith. So what is faith? What does it look like? And how do you run the race we call life with faith?

Nehemiah was granted permission and the responsibility to take his people back toJerusalemto rebuild the broken city walls and gates. The repair was necessary to protect the 'holy city' from enemy attacks. After the work had begun, he faced scorn, slander, and threats from enemies, i.e. external threats, as well as fear and discouragement from his own people, i.e. internal threats. We also have a responsibility to safeguard our lives from spiritual attack. We are well aware of the external attacks that come upon us, but sadly, there are subtle attacks from within the christian community that hinder God's work and destroy sections of his Church.
