In this episode Charles I enters the Houses of Parliament to arrest some of the members therein. This causes much outrgage and is one of the triggers for the English Civil War.

This episode looks at some of the differences of opinion between King and Parliament during the reign of Charles I.

Thomas Macaulay was a 19th century historian who wrote the massive tome, History of England from the Accession of James II. This episode is part of the introduction to his main subject (an introduction which takes up most of the first huge chapter) and covers some of the troubles in the reign of Charles I.

Thomas Macaulay is providing an overview of English history up to the reign of James II before he can begin his much closer study of the reign of James II and then William III.

In this episode Macaulay gives his opinion of James I (not good) and talks about the Divine Right of Kings. This was a subject that James I talked of and wrote upon all too often. Macaulay suggests that the Old Testament has much to say upon kings and little of it is good.

Macaulay now reaches the Tudor period in his summing up of English history prior to the accession of James II.

He talks at length about the conflicting forces in English and Scottish religion during Tudor times and, of course, some of the effects of the actions of Henry VIII.
