As we begin the book of Leviticus, (Vayikra), the third of the five books of Moses, the Torah gets down to the heart of the matter: The korbanot offerings made in the Tabernacle, (and the Holy Temple). As we prepare to conclude the book of Exodus this week with the construction of the Tabernacle and the tallying of its parts, Rabbi Richman and Yitzchak Reuven reflect upon the repercussions of the heinous Golden Calf for our generation - for our sages instruct us that this sin is revisited in each generation. Who are the nefarious Mixed Multitude who can still be heard to murmur amongst us "These are your gods, Israel, " about every false and distracting notion, fad, political expediency and change of mind? Indeed, the golden calf is all about distraction. But the focus is upon the Tablets of the Law which can be seen and read "from both sides, " with the identical result. What is the secret of this enigmatic teaching?

Last week, we read in Parshat Yitro of the most powerful collective spiritual experience in recorded human history: how the people of Israel stood at Mount Sinai, united as one man, and received the Torah from G-d Himself. The people "saw the voice " of Hashem and ascended to the highest level possible.

How can we keep that moment alive? How do we keep the connection to that moment fresh and vibrant? Perhaps this is the greatest challenge we face in serving G-d.

This week, we come crashing back "down to earth " in Parshat Mishpatim, whose basic laws form the foundation of the Torah-based society Israel is to create. But there is a bridge between these two Torah readings, which, properly understood, communicates our Creator's message to man, and that bridge is manifest in the concluding verses of last week's Torah reading. The message: the heavens are fine, but this world, with all its base physicality and nitty-gritty reality, is what really counts. The best tribute and avenue of approach to a G-d who has no end? An altar of earth.

Tune into this week's Temple Talk as Yitzchak Reuven and Rabbi Richman discuss the significance of building an altar out of earth and stones. It's about the tikkun, the rectification of Adam, his basic essence, and ultimately, every human being.

This day, called "The New Year of Trees, " conveys an uplifting idea: our sages teach that on this day, a unique wave of Divine energy flows through all of creation, a forerunner of the restoration, rejuvenation and rebirth of spring.
