Description: http://itsmydiet.com or call me 1-800-706-0162 Gunsmoke is an American radio and television Western drama series created by director Norman MacDonnell and writer John Meston. The stories take place in and around Dodge City, Kansas, during the settlement of the American West. The radio version ran from 1952 to 1961, and John Dunning[1] writes that among radio drama enthusiasts "Gunsmoke is routinely placed among the best shows of any kind and any time." The television version ran for 20 seasons from 1955 to 1975, and still remains the United States' longest-running prime time, live-action drama with 635 episodes (Law & Order ended in 2010 with 20 seasons, 456 episodes). At the end of its run in 1975, Los Angeles Times columnist Cecil Smith wrote "Gunsmoke was the dramatization of the American epic legend of the west. Our own Iliad and Odyssey, created from standard elements of the dime novel and the pulp western as romanticized by Buntline, Hart, and Twain. It was ever the stuff of legend." [2]

Description: Get your Free Tutor Software now http://internetcoachpro.com Blondie was a radio situation comedy adapted from the long-run Blondie comic strip by Chic Young. The radio program had a long run on several networks from 1939 to 1950. After Penny Singleton was cast in the title role of the feature film Blondie (1938), co-starring with Arthur Lake as Dagwood, she and Lake repeated their roles December 20, 1938, on The Bob Hope Show. The appearance with Hope led to their own show, beginning July 3, 1939, on CBS as a summer replacement for The Eddie Cantor Show. However, Cantor did not return in the fall, so the sponsor, Camel Cigarettes chose to keep Blondie on the air Mondays at 7:30pm. Camel remained the sponsor through the early WWII years until June 26, 1944. In 1944, Blondie was on the Blue Network, sponsored by Super Suds, airing Fridays at 7pm from July 21 to September 1. The final three weeks of that run overlapped with Blondie's return to CBS on Sundays at 8pm from August 13, 1944, to September 26, 1948, still sponsored by Super Suds. Beginning in mid-1945, the 30-minute program was heard Mondays at 7:30pm. Super Suds continued as the sponsor when the show moved to NBC on Wednesdays at 8pm from October 6, 1948, to June 29, 1949. Each script recounted an historical moment or figure from the history of the American Frontier of the 1600s to 1800s. But going well beyond that, each production aired a dramatization of that moment or person. To understand how difficult this had to have been, remember that this was a 15-minute program. But it wasn't really a 15-minute script.

Their iconic and influential patter routine "Who's on First?"â??with its rapid-fire word play and comprehension confusionâ??set the framework for many of their best-known comedy bits. As a result of its enduring popularity, a video loop of the team performing "Who's on First?" is on permanent exhibit in the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, New York. http://allnaturalhealthyliving.com

Description: Burns_And_Allen_400327_026_Surprise_Party_P Grace Ethel Cecile Rosalie Allen was born into a show business family and educated at Star of the Sea Convent School in San Francisco, California in girlhood. She began in vaudeville around 1909, teamed as an Irish-dance act, "The Four Colleens", with her sisters, Bessie, Hazel, and Pearl. She met George Burns and the two immediately launched a new partnership, with Gracie playing the role of the "straight man" and George delivering the punchlines as the comedian. Burns knew something was wrong when the audience ignored his jokes but snickered at Gracie's questions. Burns cannily flipped the act around: After a Hoboken, New Jersey performance in which they tested the new style for the first time, Burns's hunch proved right. Gracie was the better 'laugh-getter', especially with the "illogical logic" that formed her responses to Burns's prompting comments or questions. Description: Danny Kaye made his film debut in a 1935 comedy short subject, entitled Moon Over Manhattan. In 1937 he signed with New York-based Educational Pictures for a series of two-reel comedies. Kaye usually played a manic, dark-haired, fast-talking Russian in these low-budget shorts, opposite young hopefuls June Allyson or Imogene Coca. The Kaye series ended abruptly when the studio shut down permanently in 1938. Kaye scored a personal triumph in 1941, in the hit Broadway comedy Lady in the Dark. His show-stopping number was "Tchaikovsky," by Kurt Weill and Ira Gershwin, in which he sang the names of a whole string of Russian composers at breakneck speed, seemingly without taking a breath.

Description: The Cisco Kid was a film, radio, television and comic book series based on the fictional Western character created by O. Henry in his short story "The Caballero's Way," published in 1907 in the collection Heart of the West. Films and television depicted the Cisco Kid as a heroic Mexican caballero, although in O. Henry's original story, he was a non-Hispanic character and a cruel outlaw, probably modelled on Billy the Kid.

Description: http://www.acaiplusenergy.com The Crime Doctor is a fictional character created by Max Marcin.[1] A crook named Phil Morgan suffers amnesia and becomes criminal psychologist Dr. Robert Ordway. He was the hero of a popular CBS radio program titled Crime Doctor on Sunday nights between 1940 and 1947,[1] as well as a series of low-budget mystery thrillers inspired by the radio show.[2] On radio, he was played by Ray Collins, House Jameson, Everett Sloane and John McIntire,[1] but on film, exclusively by Warner Baxter. In the first film of the series, he regains his memory, captures his former gang members, and turns them over to the police. As an in-joke, Collins appeared in the film, but not as Ordway. Baxter was in poor health, and two years after making the tenth film, he died of pneumonia. visit our sponsor http://www.acaiplusenergy.com

Description: Dragnet was created and produced by Jack Webb, who starred as the terse Sgt. Friday. Webb had starred in a few mostly short-lived radio programs, but Dragnet would make him one of the major media personalities of his era. Dragnet had its origins in Webb's small role as a police forensic scientist in the 1948 film, He Walked by Night, inspired by the actual murder of a police officer in Los Angeles. The film was depicted in semidocumentary style, and Marty Wynn (an actual LAPD sergeant from the robbery division) was a technical advisor on the film. Webb and Wynn became friends, and both thought that the day-to-day activities of police officers could be realistically depicted, and could make for compelling drama without the forced sense of melodrama then so common in radio programming.

Description: Sylvia Picker appeared as Holliday's scatterbrained secretary, Suzy, while Edmund MacDonald played police Lt. Kling. Supporting cast members included Betty Lou Gerson, Frank Lovejoy, Lurene Tuttle, Alan Reed, Luis Van Rooten and John Beal. Vern Carstensen, who directed Box 13 for producer Richard Sanville, was also the show's announcer. Among the 52 episodes in the series were such mystery adventures as "The Sad Night,""Hot Box,""Last Will And Nursery Rhyme,""Hare And Hounds,""Hunt And Peck,""Death Is A Doll,""Tempest In a Casserole" and "Mexican Maze." The dramas featured music by Rudy Schrager. Russell Hughes, who had previously hired Ladd as a radio actor in 1935 at a $19 weekly salary, wrote the scripts, sometimes in collaboration with Ladd. The partners in Mayfair Productions were Ladd and Bernie Joslin, who had previously run the chain of Mayfair Restaurants.

Description: Box 13 was a syndicated radio series about the escapades of newspaperman-turned-mystery novelist Dan Holliday, played by film star Alan Ladd. Created by Ladd's company, Mayfair Productions, Box 13 premiered August 22, 1948, on Mutual's New York flagship, WOR, and aired in syndication on the East Coast from August 22, 1948, to August 14. 1949. On the West Coast, Box 13 was heard from March 15, 1948 to March 7, 1949. To seek out new ideas for his fiction, Holliday ran a classified ad in the Star-Times newspaper where he formerly worked. "Adventure wanted, will go anywhere, do anything -- Box 13." The stories followed Holliday's adventures when he responded to the letters sent to him by such people as a psycho killer and various victims. acaiplusenergy.com

Description: The Adventures of Sam Spade was a radio series based loosely on the private detective character Sam Spade, created by writer Dashiell Hammett for The Maltese Falcon. The show ran for 13 episodes on ABC in 1946, for 157 episodes on CBS in 1946-1949, and finally for 51 episodes on NBC in 1949-1951. The series starred Howard Duff (and later, Steve Dunne) as Sam Spade and Lurene Tuttle as his secretary Effie, and took a considerably more tongue-in-cheek approach to the character than the novel or movie. The series was largely overseen by producer/director William Spier. In 1947, scriptwriters Jason James and Bob Tallman received an Edgar Award for Best Radio Drama from the Mystery Writers of America. Before the series, Sam Spade had been played in radio adaptations of The Maltese Falcon by both Edward G. Robinson (in a 1943 Lux Radio Theater production) and by Bogart himself (in a 1946 Academy Award Theater production), both on CBS.

Description: The assassination of John F. Kennedy, the thirty-fifth President of the United States, took place on Friday, November 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas, USA at 12:30 p.m. CST (18:30 UTC). John F. Kennedy was fatally wounded by gunshots while riding with his wife Jacqueline in a presidential motorcade through Dealey Plaza. Kennedy was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald, an employee of the Texas School Book Depository in Dealey Plaza, according to the conclusions of multiple government investigations, including the ten-month investigation of the Warren Commission of 1963-1964 and the United States House Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA) of 1976-1979. This conclusion initially met with widespread support among the American public, but polls, since the original 1966 Gallup poll, show a majority of the public hold beliefs contrary to these findings.[1][2] The assassination is still the subject of widespread speculation and has spawned numerous conspiracy theories (even the HSCA, based on disputed acoustical evidence, concluded that Oswald may have had unspecified co-conspirators), though these theories have not generally been accepted by mainstream historians and no single compelling alternative theory has emerged

Description: The Shadow is a fictional character created by Walter B. Gibson in 1931 with the first story title "The Living Shadow". The character is one of the most famous of the pulp heroes of the 1930s and 1940s -- made even more famous through a popular radio series originally played by Orson Welles, The Shadow has also been featured in comic books, comic strips, television, and at least seven motion pictures. Regardless, The Shadow is best regarded for its radio years, in which pulp crime fiction received perhaps its most compelling broadcast interpretation.

Description: The series had it origins in the meeting of two minds: the ad agency for General Mills at the time, Dancer-Fitzgerald-Sample was looking for a different means to reach a child audience besides television, which was decreasing commercial minutes and increasing costs; and Himan Brown, producer-director of the CBS Radio Mystery Theater, who wanted to introduce new audiences to the dramatic form on radio. Tom Bosley was chosen as the host because of his television recognition from a kidâ??s oriented series, Happy Days. CBS chose to produce 52 original broadcasts followed by 52 repeat broadcasts.

273. STAND BY FOR CRIME 1950
http://recordings.talkshoe.com... download (audio/mpeg, 12.35Mb)

Description: This show, from the early 1950s, is a good example of the true story style of delivery made popular in radio's classic crime shows Gangbusters and Mr. District Attorney. Of course, the best and most popular of the true crime shows was Dragnet -- the monotone, "just the facts" style demanded by Jack Webb in the show made two points at once: first, that the show wasn't a typical melodramatic crime show, as had been on radio since "the good old days", and more importantly, that we were along for the ride on another day at the office -- in this case, a policeman's â??day at the office". Not a true crime show, as this is drama, but this show features Chuck Morgan, as played by Glen Langen, a very believable news anchor at KOP, a Los Angeles radio station. He is pals with Lieutenant Bill Miggs of the police force, who tips him off to hot crime news. Also in on the capers is Morgan's "Gal Friday", Carol Curtis, played by Adele Jurgens. The three meet all types -- mostly on the shady side of the street.

Description: Orvon Gene Autry (September 29, 1907 October 2, 1998) was an American performer who gained fame as The Singing Cowboy on the radio, in movies and on television. Discovered by film producer Nat Levine in 1934, he and Burnette made their film debut for Mascot Pictures Corp. in In Old Santa Fe as part of a singing cowboy quartet; he was then given the starring role by Levine in 1935 in the 12-part serial The Phantom Empire. Shortly thereafter, Mascot was absorbed by the formation of Republic Pictures Corp. and Autry went along to make a further 44 films up to 1940, all B westerns in which he played under his own name, rode his horse Champion, had Burnette as his regular sidekick and had many opportunities to sing in each film. He became the top Western star at the box-office by 1937, reaching his national peak of popularity from 1940 to 1942. He was the first of the singing cowboys, succeeded as the top star by Roy Rogers when Autry served as a flier with the Air Transport command during World War II. From 1940 to 1956, Autry also had a weekly radio show on CBS, Gene Autry's Melody Ranch. Another money-spinner was his Gene Autry Flying "A" Ranch Rodeo show which debuted in 1940. He briefly returned to Republic after the war, to finish out his contract, which had been suspended for the duration of his military service and which he had tried to have declared void after his discharge

Description: Queen, set in 1915 on the treacherous rivers of war torn Africa. Humphrey Bogart plays the gin sodden river trader, Charlie Allnut, who reluctantly agrees to help the prim missionary Rose Sayer, played in this radio version by Greer Garson, to travel down river on a hazardous journey and destroy a German gun boat. Humphrey Bogart won the 1951 Oscar for Best Actor, and again plays the uncouth captain of the tramp steamer in this special radio production, first broadcast on 15th December 1952.

290. The Jimmy Durante Show
http://recordings.talkshoe.com... download (audio/mpeg, 6.71Mb)

Description: Big-nosed and boisterous, Durante was a vaudeville favorite who remained a hit in the early days of radio and TV. Originally a saloon piano player, he combined his ragged musical talents with a rumpled charm and endless jokes about his nose, a mighty instrument which earned him the nickname "Schnozzola" or just "the Schnoz." The 1935 stage musical Jumbo paired Durante with an elephant and boosted his career; he was a popular guest on the radio shows of stars like Bob Hope and Bing Crosby, and eventually hosted his own shows as well. Durante's dese-and-dose New York accent was much parodied by impressionists of the day. He had a musical hit with the novelty tune "Inka Dinka Doo" and his famous sign-off phrase was "Goodnight, Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are."

He remained true to the clown tradition of making 'em laugh, anyway possible and as often as possible. Although known for his physical comedy, he was a master character actor and mime, and had a joke book that was reputed to have 180 thousand jokes

One corner of The Rectangle was home to Frank King's Gasoline Alley, where characters Walt, Doc, Avery and Bill held weekly conversations about automobiles. Description: Jack Carson (October 27, 1910 – January 3, 1963) was a Canadian-born U.S.-based film actor. Jack Carson was one of the most popular character actors during the golden age of Hollywood, with a film career which spanned the 30's, 40s and 50s. Primarily employed for comic relief, his work in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof proved he could also master dramatic material. During his career, he worked at RKO, MGM (cast opposite Myrna Loy and William Powell in Love Crazy), but most of his memorable work was at Warner Brothers. Carson's trade mark was the wisecracking know it all who eventually and typically was undone by his own over self-confidence.

He was one of the biggest stars in classic American radio and was also a major television personality. Benny was renowned for his flawless comic timing and (especially) his ability to get laughs with either a pregnant pause or a single expression, such as his signature exasperated Well!. In hand with his dear friend and great rival Fred Allen — their long-running feud was one a famous running gag — Benny helped establish a basic palette from which comedy since has rarely deviated, no matter how extreme or experimental it has become in their wake.[

306. 770611 37 Adventures of Oliver Twist
http://recordings.talkshoe.com... download (audio/mpeg, 9.34Mb)

Description: Oliver Twist may be a portent of what is to come. The variety of debt acknowledged by this version of Oliver Twist-it was produced by Diplomat Films in association with United Productions and WGBH Boston for HTV-may explain much. It was never a simple matter translating narrative prose fiction to broadcast drama, but the long established British way of dramatizing classic novels, with roots going back half a century, on the whole maintained a tradition of fidelity to the novelist's intentions, insofar as they could be translated into broadcast drama. Writers dramatizing the novels were consistent in their endeavours faithfully to deliver the originals' story, narrative and meaning. In essence, the radio or television dramatist's art was put at the service of the novelist. Currently things seem to be changing.

It was also a warning against the over-reaching of modern man and the Industrial Revolution, alluded to in the novel's subtitle, The Modern Prometheus. The story has had an influence across literature and popular culture and spawned a complete genre of horror stories and films. Many distinguished authors, such as Brian Aldiss, consider this the very first science fiction novel.

In the show's familiar opening, When Irish Eyes Are Smiling, either solo on an old-sounding piano or by a larger orchestra, was interrupted by the ring of a telephone and Gardner's New Yorkese accent as he answered, Duffy's Tavern, where the elite meet to eat. Description: War is nearing its end. The Confederacy, beaten down and fading fast, is slowly realizing their cause is lost. However, there are still those diehards who will fight to the last. Among them is Joseph Paradine, a Rebel Scout who is still getting reconnaissance on Union targets. Ignoring the treasonous advice of his cowardly subordinate Dauger, Paradine decides to stealthily investigate a small town that should be a hotbed of Union activity but is strangely quiet. Paradine discovers the reason for the stillness is that everyone in the town has been frozen into immobility as if by magic. The only man stirring is a wild-looking old man named Teague, who claims that he is a warlock who has cast the spell of stillness. Teague says that he will be dead before the end of the day, so he gives his book of black magic to Paradine. The old man tells him the book can win the war for the South...but the price may be the very soul of the Confederacy! Still Valley is a fairly average episode of Twilight Zone but still boasts some notable performances and images. As Paradine, veteran actor Gary Merrill hits just the right note of weariness and toughness. He also delivers some pretty florid dialogue

312. Perry Mason - Homocide office
http://recordings.talkshoe.com... download (audio/mpeg, 2.43Mb)

Description: Mason on the Radio Since his film experience with Hollywood turned out to be so embarrassing it may come as a surprise that Gardner agreed to put his hero on radio. Although his compadres advised him to aim for a nighttime, prime time slot for Mason, Gardner sold the radio rights to Procter & Gamble, the kingpins of soap, who decided to put the series on during the day. (It was these daytime radio programs, usually funded by detergent companies, that gave rise to the name soap opera.) The Perry Mason radio series premiered on a few stations in October 1943 and in three months was playing five days a week on stations all across the country. Gardner considered the show a kind of continuing advertisement for his books, in the same way that the Ellery Queen radio show promoted the popular detective books of the same name. But when he sat down and tried to write scripts for the episodes, he failed miserably. As a soaper, I stunk, he said at the time. He admitted his strengths were in narrative writing and not scripting. When the sponsors brought in another writer to punch up the Mason character, Gardner felt his control of the show (he had veto rights) slipping away. He came to dislike the show's writing, the plots, the production, even the ads. And he must have been qualified to judge. He monitored the program every day, taking notes--not many of which were complimentary.

Episodes began with an announcer describing the basic premise of the show. Big Saint (April 26, 1951) for example, begins with, You're a Detective Sergeant, you're assigned to auto theft detail. A well organized ring of car thieves begins operations in your city. It's one of the most puzzling cases you've ever encountered. Your job: break it.

The 1935 stage musical Jumbo paired Durante with an elephant and boosted his career; he was a popular guest on the radio shows of stars like Bob Hope and Bing Crosby, and eventually hosted his own shows as well. Durante's dese-and-dose New York accent was much parodied by impressionists of the day. The series took Britain by storm and also made a major impression in the American markets, being that greatest of rarities, a British series given a network transmission slot. However, as a filmed series (rather than a videotaped one), The Avengers was able to gain a modicum of exposure in South Africa through film rentals.

http://recordings.talkshoe.com... download (audio/mpeg, 0.27Mb)

Description: Crime Classics was a U. S. radio docudrama which aired over CBS from June 15, 1953, to June 30, 1954. Created, produced, and directed by radio actor/director Elliott Lewis, the program was a historical true crime series, examining crimes and murders from the past. It grew out of Lewis' personal interest in famous murder cases and took a documentary-like approach to the subject, carefully recreating the facts, personages and feel of the time period. Comparatively little dramatic license was taken with the facts and events, but the tragedy was leavened with humor, expressed largely through the narration. The crimes dramatized generally covered a broad time and place frame from ancient Greece to late 19th-century America. Each episode in the series was co-written by Morton Fine and David Friedkin, in consultation with Lewis, although the scripting process was more a matter of research, as the stories were "adapted from the original court reports and newspaper accounts" or from the works of historians

(Some later radio reference books, beginning with The Big Broadcast in the 1970s, erroneously claimed that the two brothers; first names were John and Dan, respectively; however, use of their first names was deliberately avoided on both the radio and television programs, while at least one newspaper obituary upon Fran Striker 1961 death and a 1964 Gold Key Comics retelling of the origin both stated that the Lone Ranger given name wasDan it must be acknowledged that the 1981 big-screen version, The Legend of the Lone Ranger, gave the names of John and Dan a degree of official standing, although the completely different names found in the 2003 TV-movie/unsold series pilot undercuts that; in any event, the name of Captain Reid son, and the Rangers nephew, a later character who became a sort of juvenile sidekick to the Masked Man, was Dan Reid.) The party finds itself in a murderous ambush arranged by Cavendish and a man named Collins, who has infiltrated the Rangers for the gang as a scout, that seemingly leaves every ranger dead. Then Cavendish shoots Collins in the back, reasoning that someone who would betray the rangers could also betray his gang.

Costello (1906-1959) had become a comic after failing as a movie stunt double and extra. Abbott (1897-1974) had been in burlesque since 1916, first as a cashier, then a producer and finally a performer. Throughout the late 1930s, Abbott and Costello built their act by adapting and improving upon dozens of old burlesque sketches, including "Who;s on First?" In 1938 they received national exposure for the first time by performing on the radio show The Kate Smith Hour, which lead to a Broadway musical, "The Streets of Paris," the following year, and then, in 1940, a contract with Universal. Abbott and Costello released their first film in 1940 entitled, One Night in the Tropics. Although Abbott and Costello were only filling supporting roles in the film, they stole the film with their classic routines. This led to a long-term contract with the studio and their second film, "Buck Privates," 1941 secured their place as movie stars. They made over 30 films between 1940 and 1956, and were among the most popular and highest-paid entertainers in the world during World War II. They also hosted a weekly radio program from 1942-49. Description: Louis Dearborn L'Amour was not only the West's best-selling storyteller, he was the consummate Western man, a pattern for the white-hatted heros he wrote about. Hard-working and soft-spoken, he was proud of his accomplishments, although often shy in his remembrances. L'Amour literally elevated himself by his proverbial boot straps, and in the process left footprints that few writers will be able to fill. Luck had nothing to do with his successes, he said not long before his death in June 1988. "Nor have I had any connections or breaks that I did not create for myself." The work ethic was instilled in L'Amour as a child by his parents in Jamestown, North Dakota. His father, a veterinarian and farm machinery salesman, was involved in local politics. Young Louie played cowboys and Indians in the family barn, which served as his father's veterinary hospital, and did more than his share of reading, particularly G. A. Henty, an Englishman who had written of wars through the nineteenth century. L'Amour said "it enabled me to go into school with a great deal of knowledge that even my teachers didn't have about wars and politics."

Description: Alan Walbridge Ladd (September 3, 1913 ? 29 January 1964) was an American film actor. He was famous for his emotionless demeanor and small stature (reports of his height vary from 5'2" to 5'9", with 5'6" being the most generally accepted today). In just about all of his films he played either the hero or a bad guy with a conscience. Ladd was born in Hot Springs, Arkansas to English immigrant parents, and died in Palm Springs, California of an overdose of alcohol and sedatives at the age of 50. After first becoming a star with his performance as a hitman with a conscience in This Gun for Hire (1942), he became most famous for his starring role as a gunfighter in the classic 1953 western Shane. Veronica Lake was an ideal co-star; as she was so petite, 4' 11½" (1.51 m), she made him seem taller than he really was. Ladd also made Quigley's Top 10 Stars of the Year List 3 times, 1947, 1953 and 1954. In 1954 he starred along side Peter Cushing and Patrick Troughton in The Black Knight. 366. Green Hornet _ Oliver Perry
http://recordings.talkshoe.com... download (audio/mpeg, 6.42Mb)

Description: Kato is a fictional character from The Green Hornet radio program. This character has also appeared with the Green Hornet in film, television, book and comic book versions as well. Kato was the Hornet's sidekick and had been played by a number of actors including Keye Luke and, in the television series, Bruce Lee. Kato was The Green Hornet's driver, bodyguard and side-kick who donned a mask to help him in his adventures. According to the storyline, years before the series, Britt Reid had saved Kato's life while travelling in the Philippines. Depending on the version of the story, this prompted Kato to become Reid's assistant or friend. Kato was originally presented as being a Filipino of Japanese ancestry (see Japanese Filipino). After the 1941 bombing of Pearl Harbor the program played up his Filipino heritage and played down his Japanese roots. This led to the mistaken assumption of many fans that the writers had changed Kato's nationality. Kato was a skilled driver, fighter and mechanic in all versions of the story. In the television series he also became an expert in kung fu. It was due in part to Bruce Lee's portrayal of this character that kung fu became popular in the United States in the 1960s. In addition, this version also had him using green sleeve darts to give him a ranged attack he can use to counter enemies with guns long enough to close in to fight hand to hand. http://www.radioamerica.biz/

367. orson wells War of the world
http://recordings.talkshoe.com... download (audio/mpeg, 7.09Mb)

Description: H. G. Wells' novel is about a Martian invasion of Earth at the end of the 19th century, as related by a narrator seeing the events unfold in England. The radioplay's story was adapted by and written primarily by Howard Koch, with input from Orson Welles and the staff of CBS's Mercury Theatre On The Air. The action was transferred to contemporary Grover's Mill, a community that has since been annexed by West Windsor Township, New Jersey, and the radio program's format was meant to simulate a live newscast of developing events. To this end, Welles even played recordings of Herbert Morrison's radio reports of the Hindenburg disaster to actor Frank Readick and the rest of the cast to demonstrate the mood he wanted. About half of the 55-minute play was a contemporary retelling of the events of the novel, presented as a series of news bulletins in documentary style. This approach to radio drama was not exactly new. Fr. Ronald Knox's satirical "newscast" of a riot overtaking London over the British Broadcasting Company in 1926 had taken a similar approach (and created much the same effect upon its audience). Welles had himself also been influenced by the Archibald MacLeish dramas The Fall of The City and Air Raid, the former using Welles himself in the role of a live radio news reporter. But the approach had never been done before with as much continued verisimilitude[1]), and the innovative format has been cited as a key factor in the confusion that would follow.

Actor Harold Peary played the character during its transition from the parent show into the spin-off, and later in a quartet of feature films released at the height of the show's popularity.
