One operation to attach steel plates to the bone, and a second operation once the bone has healed, to remove them. For the past ten years, Professor Rudd and his team have been researching degradable polymers that would be as strong as the steel plates, but could be absorbed by the body, thus eliminating the need for secondary surgery.

Medical simulators are not entirely new, but this is the first simulator of its kind combining advanced computer graphics with technology that will allow surgeons to 'feel' the patient as they practice complicated brain surgery. Developed by a multi-disciplinary team from the University's Schools of Human Development, Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering and Computer Science the device could be used to train surgeons to a higher level than can be achieved in the operating theatre, making high risk surgery far safer for patients. Not exactly brain surgery - but very, very close!

237. Cow Heaven
http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/po... download (video/mp4, 20.90Mb)

Description: The UK's University of Nottingham must have the most luxurious Dairy Centre in modern farming! The University's state of the art facility has invested extensively in robotic systems, designed to significantly improve both milk yields and animal welfare. Most impressive of the robotic systems at the Dairy Centre are the robotic milking machines. These machines allow the cows to decide exactly when, and how often, they want to be milked during the course of the day. The animals queue up to use the self activated milking cubicles. Laser systems scan the animals' udders and automatically attach the milking machine, allowing the cow to, effectively, milk itself anything up to six times a day. The outcome at this dairy farm of the future has been higher milk yields and a healthier, more contented herd of cows.

238. Sat-Nav: Driving aid or driving distraction?
http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/po... download (video/mp4, 24.80Mb)

Description: A research team at Nottingham University led by Dr Gary Burnett is using a purpose built driving simulator to study how the use of different Sat-Nav systems affects the driving of members of the public of all ages, even measuring how long they look away from the road when performing different functions. Their initial studies of this area of "Human-Computer Interaction" (HCI) show marked differences in the software design of different systems, which has significant safety implications, for example the same functions that took just eighteen seconds to complete on one system took almost a minute to do on another. In Japan, where the technology has been available for ten years, over 3.5 million vehicles have systems installed, and in the late nineties the Japanese transport ministry began to identify accidents caused by drivers distracted by their route guidance displays. Today all cars for sale in the Japanese market have standardised the controls of in-car navigation systems so that many functions are blocked once the vehicle is in motion. While the Nottingham team's research continues, the marked disparities between systems suggests that similar steps may be needed in other countries too, as the use of Sat-Nav systems grows.

239. Shakespeare's lost play
http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/po... download (video/mp4, 25.40Mb)

Description: A literary detective believes he has evidence that links an 18th Century play, "Double Falsehood", to a lost work by Shakespeare. The author of "Double Falsehood", Lewis Theobald, always maintained that his play was a re-working of the Bard's original, an idea many dismissed as a hoax. But now Professor Brean Hammond from the University of Nottingham in the UK believes he has found credible evidence that links back to "Cardenio" - Shakespeare's lost play based on storylines from Don Quixote. Theobald claimed to have three original texts. As we approach the Bard's birth date (April 23rd) can Professor Hammond unearth another play to add to Shakespeare's vast canon of work?
