1. Repaying Evil With Good http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (audio/mpeg, 0.78Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #54. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, and his companion, Faithful, having brought the Town of Vanity into a frenzy, the great one of the Fair calls for an examination of the men. As pilgrims interested in the Truth and journeying to the heavenly Jerusalem, the two are judged to be "bedlams and mad" and then the mistreatment begins. They are beaten. They are besmeared with dirt. They are thrown into a cage. There they are "made the object of any man's sport, or malice, or revenge." And how do Christian and Faithful respond to all this? Any guesses? And we are to remain patient in suffering as followers of Jesus. And we are to repay evil with good. It is through the power of the Holy Spirit who lives within us that we are enabled to handle abuse like Christ. "Blessed are you when men cast insults at you, and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely, on account of Me." (Matthew 5:11) "[G]reater is He who is in you than he who is in the world." (1 John 4:4b) "'But if your enemy is hungry, feed him, and if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap burning coals upon his head.' Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." (Romans 12:20-21) More to come in the next blog post. Check back soon. Click here to play |

2. Hated By The World http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (audio/mpeg, 0.79Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #53. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, and his companion, Faithful, entering in upon Vanity's Fair. Their entrance can't help but bring on a "hubbub," a stir, as the two men are diametrically opposite the people of that place. In clothing, in speech and in non-desire for the merchandise of the fair, Christian and Faithful stand separate thus inviting the contempt of onlookers. When asked what they would buy, their statement: "We buy the truth," sends the fair into a frenzy and unbridled turmoil. And so it is with believers in the world. We are aliens. We are foreigners. Our citizenship is of a different place. Our allegiance is to a different master. This does not and can never go over well with those who hate Christ, despise His name and look upon His work on the cross as irrelevant, odious. "'If the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you.'" (John 15:18-19) "'These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.'" 3. The Sinless Prince http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (audio/mpeg, 0.93Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #52. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, along with his companion, Faithful, standing at the doorstep of Vanity's Fair. It was once visited by the Prince of princes Himself many years prior. While there Beelzebub invited Him to taste of its vanities even to the point of offering Him the position of lord of the fair. It was his to afford since he was the chief. The cost: a single bow of the knee in worship. But the God / Man would not. He could not. And it's a mystery that Christ was tempted in all things as we are yet without sin. And could Jesus have really sinned? And if He could not, then how was it a legitimate temptation? The fact is it was a legitimate temptation. Just like I don't understand how God created all things out of nothing and can't comprehend the Trinity (three equal Persons existing in one God) so I am unable to grasp how One who could not sin could be legitimately tempted to sin. The purpose of our Lord's temptation was to show He indeed was sinless. And don't be misled. Satan / Beelzebub was shaking in his boots at the sight. "Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world, and their glory; and he said to Him, 'All these things will I give You, if You fall down and worship me.' Then Jesus said to him, 'Begone, Satan! For it is written, "You shall worship the Lord Your God, and serve Him only."'" "For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin." (Hebrews 4:15) More to come in the next blog post. 4. A Fair Of Vanity http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (audio/mpeg, 0.93Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #51. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, along with his companion, Faithful, having received the prediction of the suffering that awaits them from their good friend, Evangelist, they now come upon a town called: Vanity. In this town is a fair that takes place year round. It's name is: "Vanity Fair." It's founders include Beelzebub, Apollyon and Legion who have seen fit to allow each and every pleasure of sin that a man or woman could dream of or desire to embrace to be a part of the Fair. Take a look at some of the merchandise sold there, but don't look too long or set your own heart upon it or you, too, will be enticed: "houses, lands, trades, places, honours, preferments, titles; countries, kingdoms, lusts, pleasures; and delights of all sorts, as whores, bawds, wives, husbands, children, masters, servants, lives, blood, bodies, souls, silver, gold, pearls, precious stones, and what not." And is there a better description of the world that we live in and apart from God? It has been set up to distract us away from Him. It has been set up to take His place in our lives. Have you sold your soul to the Fair? "Do not love the world, nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. And the world is passing away and also its lusts." (1 John 2:15-17a) More to come in the next blog post. Check back soon. Click here to play |

5. Prediction of Suffering http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (audio/mpeg, 0.98Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #50. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, along with his companion, Faithful, having given leave to Talkative, they are now come upon by Evangelist. It is a most delightful reunion to meet their good, old friend and counselor once again. "How hath it fared with you?" Evangelist asks Christian and Faithful. And the two men go on to recount their whole journey to him. It hasn't been without difficulty that Christian and Faithful have made it to that place. But they have passed the test and Evangelist rejoices in the hearing of it. He responds, "My sons, you have heard in the words of the truth of the gospel, that you must through many tribulations enter the kingdom of heaven." And then Evangelist speaks further predicting the challenge that awaits both travelers in the next town. In the end, one or both will lose his/their life/lives. And trials are just a part of the package for the man/woman following Jesus. A watered-down and sugar-coated, 21st-century and Americanized gospel says, "It ain't so." Tell that to first-century Christians given as food to lions by a Roman Emperor. " None of us is exempt from suffering. Not a one. "[Simeon prophesied to Mary as regards her Son's crucifixion, 'A]nd a sword will pierce even your own soul.'" (Luke 2:35) "Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? Just as it is written, 'For Thy sake we are being put to death all day long; We were considered as sheep to be slaughtered.' But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us." (Romans 8:35-37) More to come in the next blog post. Check back soon. Click here to play |

6. Discerning the Talker http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (audio/mpeg, 0.97Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #49. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, giving "further discovery" of the man, Talkative's nature to his companion, Faithful. Talkative's name fits him well. For he just talks and talks - and talks some more. He talks of prayer, but prays not. He talks of repentance, but repents not. He talks of faith, but believes not. He talks of the new birth, but is saved not. All that Talkative is is in the saying of it, but there's no doing. But how can Christian go about judging such a one? I mean, isn't this just intolerance on his part and uncaring? And didn't Jesus say, "Judge not lest you be judged"? The fact is we are to judge, but with right judgments. Jesus wasn't saying not to judge. He was saying not to judge in a wrong and sinful fashion. When it comes to the person who is posing as a believer, Scripture is clear about how to discern such a one and deal with him / her. "'And if your brother sins, go and reprove him in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother. But if he does not listen to you, take one or two more with you, so that by the mouth of two or three witnesses every fact may be confirmed. And if he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax-gatherer.'" (Matthew 18:15-17) "For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Do you not judge those who are within the church? But those who are outside, God judges. Remove the wicked man from among yourselves." (1 Corinthians 5:12-13) More to come in the next blog post. Check back soon. Click here to play |

7. A Bunch of Hot Air http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (audio/mpeg, 0.83Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #48. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, having listened to his companion, Faithful's, pilgrimage story to completion, the two good men now come across another traveler: Talkative. He is thus named for his loquacious and high-standing eloquence. Just listen to him: "What thing is so pleasant, and what so profitable, as to talk of the things of God? What things so pleasant? that is, if a man hath any delight in things that are wonderful . . . where shall he find things recorded so delightful, and so sweetly penned, as in the Holy Scripture?" And with such words and more Talkative would deceive even Faithful except for his brother Christian calling him to account. Talkative isn't as he presents himself to be. All he really is is a bunch of hot air. And even in our day great-sounding words can give the appearance of goodness / piety while all the time abandoning true religion. "Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to His disciples, saying: 'The scribes and the Pharisees have seated themselves in the chair of Moses; therefore all that they tell you, do and observe, but do not do according to their deeds; for they say things and do not do them.'" (Matthew 23:1-3) "This is pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father, to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world." 8. Shame on Shame http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (audio/mpeg, 0.92Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #47. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, listening to Faithful's pilgrimage story yet further still. Having turned aside from the one called Discontent, Faithful tells of meeting another by the name of: Shame. Shame speaks of minding religion, cultivating a tender conscience, responding contritely to a sermon, asking a neighbor for forgiveness, making restitution, etc. But according to Shame, they're all embarrassments to conduct one's life in such a manner. Men ought not submit to such humiliations - that is, real men of the world. And why should they? It only gives invitation to ridicule. To which Faithful responds with blushing. But then his mind is quickened to the following: "that that which is highly esteemed among men, is had in abomination with God," that "they that make themselves fools for the kingdom of heaven are wisest," and "that the poor man that loveth Christ is richer than the greatest man in the world that hates Him." These reflections help Faithful to cast shame on Shame. And to follow Jesus is to bear His reproach - and "proudly." Is it not? And we aren't trying to "save face" with the world. Or are we? "For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes." (Romans 1:12ab) "'Blessed are you when men cast insults at you, and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely, on account of Me. Rejoice, and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.'" (Matthew 5:11-12) More to come in the next blog post. Check back soon. 9. Persuasions of Discontent http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (audio/mpeg, 0.92Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #46. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, taking in Faithful's pilgrimage story yet still. Having recently been rescued from the Law by the One with "holes in His hands and His sides," Faithful next encounters another called: Discontent. This one is not without his own strong persuasions which attend Faithful in the following manner (in Humility's Valley): Discontent tells Faithful there is no honor in a place like this. And to travel such a path is to turn his back on friends including: "Pride, Arrogance, Self-Conceit, Worldly Glory." How could Faithful allow himself to be made a fool in their eyes? Faithful counters that though these may have once been his associations, they are now as foreigners. As to the Valley of Humiliation's dishonor, Faithful puts off Discontent with the truth: "[B]efore honor is humility; and a haughty spirit before a fall." And discontentment's voice is a powerful force. If heeded it would have us turn from the very path of Christ for our lives. Many times God's will leads away from what the world upholds as the benchmark of success and achievement. But we're not living this life for ourselves. Or are we? "By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharoah's daughter; choosing rather to endure ill-treatment with the people of God, than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin." (Hebrews 11:24-25) "Not that I speak from want; for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I can do all things through Him (Christ) who strengthens me." 10. Knocked Down by the Law http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (audio/mpeg, 0.73Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #45. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, listening to Faithful share his pilgrimage story yet further. Having just ripped himself away from Adam the first, he is now run down by another exceedingly powerful and deadly foe. It is none other than Moses the Lawgiver who fells Faithful not just once or twice, but even for a third time. And Moses would have made an end of Faithful except for the One who walks by and bids him: "forbear." The Rescuer isn't recognized at the first by Faithful, but having been enlightened to "the holes in His hands and His sides," he then perceives him to be the very Christ of God. And the Law was given to expose humankind's awful and wretched condition of sin. All of us are in dire straits and under the penalty of death. Are you trying to live according to the Ten Commandments? The fact is you can't. You need help. You need a Savior. You need Jesus. "Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us - for it is written, 'Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree.'" (Galatians 3:13) "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 6:23) More to come in the next blog post. Check back soon. 11. Deceitful Man in a Deceitful Town http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (audio/mpeg, 0.77Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #44. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, listening to Faithful share his pilgrimage story. Having slipped through the clutches of Wanton, he tells of his next confrontation with a man named Adam the first whose dwelling place is the Town of Deceit. Adam the first beckons Faithful to take up residence in his home and offers his three daughters in marriage as part of the package. Faithful can hardly resist the beauties: the Lust of the Flesh, the Lust of the Eyes and the Pride of Life. Except for the words: "Put off the old man with his deeds" that he reads on Adam the first's forehead, he would have stayed. But Faithful is turned to flight. Upon his exiting the first Adam reaches out and would have literally torn off Faithful's arm he grabs at it so roughly. And the carnal nature is an awful and strong and persuasive parasite that just won't let go. It will have us to our death if we don't kill it first. Are you allowing any or all of three "ladies of lust" to live as a bride in your house? "'If your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.'" (Matthew 5:29) "Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts." (Romans 6:12) More to come in the next blog post. Check back soon. C lick here to play |

12. A Strange Woman http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (audio/mpeg, 0.72Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #43. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, having attained the company of Faithful on the journey, he asks him to share his pilgrimage story. Faithful tells of his relative non-trouble with the Slough of Despond (compared to Christian's). But then he speaks of an accosting by a strange woman, Wanton, who must needs have him. A picture of Potiphar's wife, Faithful faces a test at a level like Joseph's of old. Wanton's offer includes "all carnal and fleshly content." How can a man escape such an appeal as this? Here's a quick prescription for victory against temptation: (1) Call sin what it is; (2) Understand who it is you're sinning against when you sin: Jesus; (3) Love God so much you'll never want to do anything to hurt Him; (4) Flee temptation when it lays hold of you. (Watch the following video for more help: Escape From Sin.) "And she caught him (Joseph) by his garment, saying, 'Lie with me!' And he left his garment in her hand and fled, and went outside." (Genesis 39:12) "Her (the adulteress) feet go down to death, Her steps lay hold of Sheol." (Proverbs 5:5) More to come in the next blog post. Check back soon. Click here to play |

13. Companions for the Journey http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (audio/mpeg, 0.67Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #42. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, slipping past a now powerless Pope and dead Pagan as he leaves the Valley of the Shadow of Death. He spies ahead and what is it that he sees? Why, of all things, it's another pilgrim! He calls out to one, Faithful, to wait, but he will neither slow nor turn even a step behind with "the avenger of blood" on his heels. So Christian must run Faithful down. And does. In this way the two are joined together as companions for the journey. And if you've been following Jesus very long, you've walked both alone at times and with a companion at other times. And maybe it is that you're alone today. But could it be that God has somebody just over that next ascent to lock arms with of like mind and heart? I'd like to suggest He does. And it might even be that he/she is already in your life. You just haven't given him/her a chance. "Now it came about when he had finished speaking to Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as himself." 14. Pope and Pagan http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (audio/mpeg, 0.79Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #41. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, finally (and thankfully) arriving at the end of the Valley of the Shadow of Death. Here he discovers the "blood, bones, ashes, and mingled bodies of men, even of pilgrims" that have gone before. It is at the hands of the two giants who live in this part of the Valley (named "Pope" and "Pagan") that a miserable end has been made of a great many. And there really is nothing to sustain a person in the dark trial via "Religion" or the "World." These two belief systems have no power; they afford no peace; they allow from pain no relief. "Religion" offers much in duty and ritual sacrifice that gives a sense of righteousness; the "World" offers much in pleasure and material gain which gives a sense of "having it all together." But these are only temporary statuses. Once again, the dark trial brings the illusion to light. "'And everyone who hears these words of Mine, and does not act upon them, will be like a foolish man, who built his house upon the sand. And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and burst against that house; and it fell, and great was its fall.'" (Matthew 7:26-27) "But My righteous one shall live by faith; And if he shrinks back, My soul has no pleasure in Him." (Hebrews 10:39) More to come in the next blog post. Check back soon. 15. A Light in the Darkness http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (audio/mpeg, 0.78Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #40. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian - quite frankly, this Valley of the Shadow of Death has just been an all-consuming and burdensome trudge. And it continues still! Except now the dawn has broken and the good man with his own eyes can consider his torments. They are as awful in the light as they were in the dark: "the ditch ... and the quag ... the hob-goblins, and satyrs, and dragons of the pit." But these Christian leaves behind as the second part of the Valley he now approaches. It's more dangerous than the first?! Indeed, it is chock "full of snares, traps, gins, and nets ... pits, pitfalls, deep holes, and shelvings down there," let alone "Pope" and "Pagan" are waiting yet further. And what of the many dangers Christ has seen us (you) through? He is our light in the darkness. And without Him we'd have been lost long ago, but by His grace we are being kept. "No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper." (Isaiah 54:17; KJV) "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." (Psalm 119:105; KJV) "But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold." (Job 23:10; KJV) More to come in the next blog post. Check back soon. 16. Whisper of Wickedness http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (audio/mpeg, 0.67Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #39. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, pressing even further through the Valley of the Shadow of Death. Here he is overtaken by confounding thoughts. Such things enter his mind as would only be acceptable to a blasphemer. How could a good man ponder such things? How could he entertain corruption and contempt, irreverence and insults as regards Him who died on the cross? Little does Christian know it really isn't his own thinking at all. For a devil has come close to whisper wickedness in his ear. And have you ever had something appear in the theater of your mind out of the wild blue and of the sordid? At such a time you need to take authority over the wicked spirit. Command silence in the name of Jesus. "And the devil said to Him, 'I will give You all this domain and its glory; for it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. Therefore if You worship before me, it shall all be Yours.' And Jesus answered and said to him, 'It is written, "you shall worship the Lord your God and serve Him only."'" 17. Overwhelmed By Depressing Voices http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (audio/mpeg, 0.68Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #38. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, continuing his treacherous trek through the Valley of the Shadow of Death. Having passed by the mouth of Hell (with the help of his weapon: All-Prayer) he now is overwhelmed by "doleful voices." Their depressing, down-in-the-dumps chorus puts Christian's mind in a fright along with the rushings to and fro about him. And is that really a "company of fiends" now coming in his direction? The thoughts of turning back again overtake his mind. Nevertheless, the good man presses forward with a shout, "I will walk in the strength of the Lord God." And could it be that "doleful (depressing) voices" are overwhelming you, too? His strength is perfect, as a contemporary Gospel singer has written. It's time to lean on the everlasting arms, as another traditional Gospel hymn encourages. "Why are you in despair, O my soul? And why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him." (Psalm 42:11ab) "But He knows the way I take; When He has tried me, I shall come forth as gold." (Job 23:10) More to come in the next blog post. 18. Passing By The Mouth of Hell http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (audio/mpeg, 0.67Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #37. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, having entered into the Valley of the Shadow of Death, he cautiously ventures forward. And coming to the midst of the Valley, another terrible fright awaits him. For in the middle of the Valley of the Shadow of Death resides the very mouth of Hell. "Flame and smoke ... come out [from it] in such abundance, with sparks and hideous noises." Christian's sword, though able to vanquish the insidious Apollyon, will have no effect against this foe and it's continuous attempts to capture his soul. He must turn to another weapon. Thus Christian's sword is thrust back in it's sheath to be replaced by none other than: All-Prayer. And even if Hell throws everything at us, it will not prevail. The praying man or woman it can not overcome. "[A]nd upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of [Hell] shall not overpower it." (Matthew 16:18b) "Put on the full armor of God. ...With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit." (Ephesians 6:11a, 18a) More to come in the next blog post. Check back soon. 19. Into the Valley of the Shadow of Death http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (audio/mpeg, 0.70Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #36. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, having turned a deaf ear to those who would have him go back, he proceeds into the Valley of the Shadow of Death. It is for a very good reason that it is thus named. On the right hand of the valley is a very deep ditch "into which the blind hath led the blind of all ages" to their destruction. And on the left hand of the valley is a very dangerous quag "into which, if even a good man falls, he finds no bottom for his foot to stand on: into this quag King David once did fall." So Christian is walking a veritable tight rope. The path is "exceeding narrow." Add to that, it is dark. Christian literally cannot see in front of him or be sure of his next step. And sometimes our lives as followers of Jesus can seem almost impossible to navigate due to danger and darkness. In such instances we're reminded of our never ceasing and enduring need of our Savior and Guide. "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want." (Psalm 23:1) "God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear." (Psalm 46:1-2a) More to come in the next blog post. Check back soon. Click here to play |

20. An Evil Report http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (audio/mpeg, 0.65Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #35. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, having defeated Apollyon, he gives praise to God and receives a healing touch. He thus picks up his journey again. But as reality would have it's say, another trial awaits the good man. Not too far along he comes upon the Valley of the Shadow of Death which he "must needs go through." Initially, he's greeted by two men who are "children of them that brought up an evil report of the good land." Speaking to Christian about the frightful dangers that lie ahead, these would have him to run the other way. But he sees through the doubting chatter venturing to continue into the belly of the beast instead. And there are many voices/counsels that would turn us out of the path. And we might give heed to these except for the example of the apostles and prophets and testimony of our Lord Himself. "We must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God." (Acts 14:22b) "'For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.'" (Matthew 16:25) More to come in the next blog post. Check back soon. 21. One Rerfect Thrust http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (audio/mpeg, 0.79Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #34. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, having been weakened by his adversary's assault, Apollyon now moves to finish him off. A wrestling match ensues. Blows are thrown. Christian is felled and loses his sword. Apollyon presses in for the kill. All is despair. But wait. As the King of Glory would have it, the good man reaches out in a last desperate grasp for his sword, snatches it and with one perfect thrust turns back the fiend. Mortally wounded, Apollyon slides away (until another more opportune time?). And the devil would have us to lose our grip on the Word of God lest we use it against him. And if he can get it out of our hand, our head and our heart, he has us to dispose of. What place in your life do the Scriptures hold? Are you reading, memorizing, meditating and applying them? If you are, then Satan doesn't have a chance. "Again, the devil took Him (Jesus) to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory; and he said to Him, 'All these things I will give You, if You fall down and worship me.' Then Jesus said to him, 'Go, Satan! For it is written, "You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only."' Then the devil left Him." (Matthew 4:8-11a) More to come in the next blog post. 22. Weaker and Weaker Still http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (audio/mpeg, 0.89Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #33. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, having encountered an adversary, Apollyon, he must withstand a initial verbal assault. Among other things the fiend fills the believer's mind with are his past sins, how he's even entertained turning back from the Way at such an early stage. But Christian is able to navigate this abuse recalling the tender mercies of his Lord to forgive. So Apollyon raises the stakes. The fiery darts are now thrust at Christian and with tremendous frequency - "as thick as hail." Thus he's wounded in his "head, hand and foot." Is this how it's supposed to end? - this suddenly? - this painfully? But Christian "must needs grow weaker and weaker" still. And even the crush of the enemy of our souls is for our own good (ie. Job). I know it's hard to believe that especially as it seems there's no end in sight to some of the trials we face and the hurts we must endure. But still the truth remains and is alive and at work in us who are committed to Jesus: "for when I am weak, then I am strong" (2 Corinthians 12:10c). "And He (the Lord) said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.' Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may dwell in me. Therefore, I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ's sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong" (2 Corinthians 12:9-10). 23. Stopped by Apollyon http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (audio/mpeg, 0.58Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #32. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, having entered in upon the Valley of Humiliation, he encounters a formidable foe. From across the field Apollyon appears to meet him having once been in charge of his soul. This enemy is hideous to behold so Christian's mind is overcome with fear and thoughts of turning back. This will be his hardest test yet. Can Christian survive? And Satan is quite the threat. To miss this is to our own hurt. The devil will have us when we least expect it. Don't let your guard down. "'Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded permission to sift you like wheat.'" (Luke 22:31) "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places." 24. Entering the Valley of Humiliation http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (audio/mpeg, 0.55Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #31. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, finally taking leave of the good ladies' house. As he's departing, Discretion and her sisters take care to accompany him to the bottom of the hill. There Christian is to enter a valley called "Humiliation." He will feel the full force of it. And Christianity and following Jesus really is an engagement with humility/humbling. I wonder if it's been forgotten in some corners of the church (especially in America?). "'A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a slave above his master. It is enough for the disciple that he become as his teacher, and the slave as his master.'" (Matthew 10:24-25) "And being found in appearance as a man, He [Christ] humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross." 25. Instruments of God in the Hands of Men http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (audio/mpeg, 0.71Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #30. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, "on the morrow" with the ladies of the house in the study a second time. In this museum of sorts he is allowed to look upon ancient instruments of God whereby in the hands of men great victories were won. Among these are: "(1) Moses' rod; (2) the hammer and nail which Jael slew Sisera; (3) the pitchers, trumpets and lamps ... with which Gideon put to flight the armies of Midian. [Christian is also shown] (4) the ox' goad, wherewith Shamgar slew six hundred men ... (5) the jawbone with which Samson did such mighty feats ... (6) the sling and stone with which David slew Goliath ... and (7) the sword also with which [the Lord Jesus] will kill the man of sin (Antichrist)." And so what do you find in your hand? And whatever it is - whatever instrument of God (ie. time, talent, treasure) you have at your disposal, are you using it to bring to an end the reign of unrighteousness? "And after him came Shamgar the son of Anath, who struck down six hundred Philistines with an oxgoad; and he also saved Israel." (Judges 3:31) More to come in the next blog post. Check back soon. 26. From a Mighty Breed http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (audio/mpeg, 0.71Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #29. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, upon waking up from such a peaceful sleep, he is led by the ladies of the house to the study. For his own profit Christian is allowed to view the ancestry of the Lord of the hill and in detail His righteous acts. Of course, He is the Son of the Ancient of Days. And having called many into His service, the names of these and their deeds Christian is also given the opportunity to consider. The ladies read aloud of the saints' value and worth: "how they had subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, and turned to flight the armies of the aliens." And in Christ's name the people of God do great exploits. What part of His service/the battle do you find yourself in today? Stand strong, good Christian. You are from a mighty breed. Stand strong and gain the victory. "'Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,' says the Lord." (Zechariah 4:6) "Greater is He who is in you than He who is in the world." 27. Chamber of Peace http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (audio/mpeg, 0.56Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #28. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, having enjoyed conversation until late evening with the good sisters, he is laid down to rest in the chamber called "Peace." It's window opens toward the east for the greeting of the sunrise by pilgrims. Christian sleeps soundly there and at morning light he awakes to sing: "Where am I now? Is this the love and care Of Jesus, for the men that pilgrims are, Thus to provide! that I should be forgiven, And dwell already the next door to heaven!" And our bedchamber is now "Peace" and it is our inheritance to awake each day to joy and hope with the Son rising in our hearts. To this end we can't help but rejoice and be glad. Has it been your experience in Christ? "I will sing of the lovingkindness of the Lord forever; To all generations I will make known Thy faithfulness with my mouth." 28. A Tale of Adventure http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (audio/mpeg, 0.55Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #27. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, having passed Discretion's test, he is invited into her house to enjoy conversation with her sisters. No better women was a man of God introduced to than Prudence, Piety and Charity. They ask the good Christian to tell of his wanderings of which he is happy to share with them. His entire adventure is brought to bear to the encouragement and edification of all. And it's our testimony that is most powerful in the blessing of others. What God has done in our lives, what trials and tribulations He has seen us through and the care of Christ in the midst, who can not be but lifted up to hear such things? We all have a story who have received Jesus. So what's yours? "And my tongue shall declare Thy righteousness And Thy praise all day long." (Psalm 35:8) More to come in the next blog post. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, having been greeted by Watchful the Porter, he's now introduced to a lady named Discretion. Christian would enter her house to meet her sisters, but before that Discretion holds him to scrutiny. She therefore asks a host of questions of the good man to make sure his character is beyond just name only. And there are many who call themselves "Christ followers," but they aren't really following Jesus. Do you know anyone like that? And if we would be the Lord's disciples we must cling/adhere to and place our complete confidence and trust in Him. And we must also hold dear His Word to obey and upon it. Then into her house Discretion will invite us. She will not receive another. "'If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.'" (John 14:15) More to come in the next blog post. Check back soon. 30. Better Late Than Never http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (audio/mpeg, 0.52Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #25. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, having navigated past the lions with no injury, he arrives at the house built by the Lord of the hill. He's greeted by Watchful the Porter who inquires as to the reason for his lateness of arrival. With a sour countenance Christian recounts of his having to backtrack due to his indulging of the flesh. And God would have us to the place of blessing sooner except that we stray from the path of obedience. Are you straying today? It's time to get back on track. Better late than never. 31. Lions in the Way http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (, 0.00Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #24. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, having found his roll (in which the writings for his encouragement are contained), he sets out again on the journey. But it's late, thus he's overtaken by darkness. And though through the dimness Christian sees the Beautiful Palace and shoots straight towards it, the lions appear to confront him. They'll do Christian no harm (though he doesn't know that) as they are beholden by chains. And the trials of this life are held in our Lord's hands and He describes their perimeters. Did you know that? The evil one has no power over us except that God allows it - and only for our good and training. "Your adversary, the devil, prowls about like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. But resist him." 32. Return To The Book http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (, 0.00Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #23. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, having continued on his journey without his roll, he ventures across a couple of men running the other way. They are Timorous and Mistrust whose frightening counsel regards two lions in the road just ahead. Christian is sent into fear. He thus reaches for his roll for instruction, but finds it gone. In Christian's deepening distress, he's moved to search for his roll. He finds it in the place where he left it. And the Scriptures are for our encouragement, uplifting and salvation. But how many Bibles sit around gathering dust while we make our own way to heaven? Let us return to God's Word. In doing so we will receive renewed vigor for the trek. "All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work." 33. Recipe for Disaster http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (, 0.00Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #22. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, climbing the Hill of Difficulty. He labors and labors still, until he comes to a restful place, an arbor by the side of the road about half way up the hill. Here Christian sits and reads from his roll and receives much encouragement. Eventually, he slips off in slumber. The problem is Christian's roll leaves his hand while he's sleeping. He wakes up later to take up his journey again, but without his roll. And to step from the fray to catch our breath and retool is much needed. But to move beyond that and use it as an opportunity to indulge the carnal nature is a recipe for disaster. It will later require that we retrace our steps to make amends. "'A little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to rest,' Then your poverty will come as a robber, And your want like an armed man." (Proverbs 24:33-34) "For the one who sows to his own flesh shall from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit shall from the Spirit reap eternal life." 34. A Shortcut to Death http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (, 0.00Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #21. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, having taken leave of three who would rather sleep, he now comes across two others named Formalist and Hypocrisy. They've just entered into the King's highway by climbing over a wall. It's a habit of theirs - taking the shortcut. Though Christian rebukes Formalist and Hypocrisy, they will have none of it to their own danger and destruction. And there are those who would obtain eternal life by their own means apart from the Gospel. There is no such possibility. Only through faith in God's Son can a person be saved. 35. Fast Asleep, But Not At Rest http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (, 0.00Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #20. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, having received release from his burden of sin at the cross, he now continues on the path to the Celestial City. He happens upon three men named Simple, Sloth and Presumption. Each are fast asleep in his own chains. Christian does his best to wake them, but to no avail. For they will not be free of their own choosing. And there are many in bed catching up on their "z's" while their lives are at risk and in danger of hell. These are resting, but not at rest since they are outside of the protection of Christ. In Him alone is the true "rest" found. "Therefore, let us fear lest, while a promise remains of entering His rest, any one of you should seem to have come short of it." 36. Released into Joy http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (, 0.00Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #19. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, leaving the care of the Interpreter. He enters into the highway of Salvation, yet he's greatly slowed by the burden on his back. Thus he comes to the place where a cross stands. His burden is loosed and falls away. Christian sheds tears of joy and gratitude as the "waters [are made to run] down his cheeks." And it's through our belief in Christ's death on the cross and His resurrection from the dead that our burden of sin is lifted and we are made free from it. Oh, the wonders and depth of Jesus' love! He's given us "beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the mantle of praise for the spirit of heaviness." (Isaiah 61:3bcd) More to come in the next blog post. Check back soon. |

37. Not Ready for Judgment Day http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (, 0.00Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #18. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, viewing the seventh and final sight shown to him by the Interpreter. This seventh sight is of a trembling man rising out of bed. He's trembling because of a dream. The man relates to Christian his dream of God's Son returning to judge the living and the dead. The angels are sent forth to separate the wheat from the chaff. Indeed, many are carried away in the clouds to glory, but the trembling man is not among them. Thus hell opens her mouth below him and he is afraid. And there will be those who are caught unaware by Judgment Day. The Lord will return like a thief in the night. 38. Pitiful Man in An Iron Cage http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (, 0.00Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #17. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, viewing the sixth sight of seven shown to him by the Interpreter. This sixth sight is of a pitiful man in an iron cage. Christian converses with the man who tells him of how he was once content on the road to the Celestial City. But that all changed when he turned himself over to insobriety and forsook the living Christ. And we, too, must not waver in our loyalty to Jesus lest we become subject to backsliding and once again trapped by unbelief and disregard for God. "For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God, and put Him to open shame." 39. Taking the Kingdom by Force http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (, 0.00Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #16. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, viewing the fifth sight of seven shown to him by the Interpreter. This fifth sight is of a stately palace guarded by armed men so that no one should enter it. There is a table not far from the palace where a man stands ready to take down the names of those who would overtake the palace. Still another man approaches him, asks for his name to be written down and then proceeds with helmet and sword to charge the palace. With fierce determination he fends off the deadly blows of the men standing guard who would stop him. Ultimately he breaks through and enters the palace and receives his reward. And if we would attain our place in glory with Christ we must do violently to opposing foes and display a spirit that won't be denied. 40. Fire Against a Wall http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (, 0.00Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #15. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, viewing the fourth sight of seven shown to him by the Interpreter. This fourth sight is of a fire burning against a wall. The devil is casting water upon it, yet the fire burns higher and hotter. This is due to the man behind the wall feeding the fire with oil. The picture is of Christ who, by His grace, maintains the Christian's life. No matter what the devil throws at us, he cannot extinguish the flame. You're not alone in your walk with God. 41. Two Children in a Room http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (, 0.00Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #14. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, viewing the third sight of seven shown to him by the Interpreter. This third sight is of two little children sitting in a room. One is named "Passion" while the other is "Patience." Passion can't wait for his treasure and spends it all when it is laid before him. Patience can wait and does. And our bodily appetites gone astray are carnal and would have us give in to them and allow them to run rampant to the extent that we forfeit the next life. And God would have us put to death our sinful "passions." "Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body that you should obey its lusts, and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God." 42. A Dusty Room Made Clean http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (, 0.00Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #13. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, viewing the second sight of seven shown to him by the Interpreter. This second sight is of a dusty parlor into which a man with a broom is called to sweep. When he does, the parlor is so encompassed with dust that it causes Christian to choke. Afterwards, a woman is called to sprinkle water in the parlor. The sweeping takes place again, but this time the parlor is made clean. And our hearts, by our own will power (ie. our trying to obey the Ten Commandments), can not be delivered from sin. It is only when the Gospel is introduced, and we receive it, that our deliverance and cleansing can come. 43. An Extremely Serious Man http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (, 0.00Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #12. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, having come into the acquaintance of the Interpreter, he is shown seven sights. The first sight is a picture on the wall of an extremely serious man. Among other things, this man has eyes lifted to heaven, the best of books in his hand, the law of truth written upon his lips, he's pleading with men, the world is behind his back and a crown of gold hangs over his head. And this is the type of person we are to listen to when it comes to the things of God. And we must be careful while on our pilgrimage to heaven that we don't pay heed to anyone else other than him (or her) who is sold out for Christ, who speaks the truths of Scripture only, who is a doer of the Word and not just a hearer, who is interested in bringing glory to God and not to himself. Watch out for false guides/teachers. "Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world." In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, having entered through the Wicket Gate, he has a conversation with the man, Goodwill. Christian tells him (whose will is good) of his wanderings and then asks if Goodwill can help him off with his burden, to which Goodwill responds, "No," and points Christian to continue straightway to the house of a man called "the Interpreter." He will show Christian "excellent things." And God's Word is filled with principles for life of the highest order into which the Holy Spirit will enlighten a believer's heart. 45. Entrance at the Gate http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (, 0.00Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #10. Upon his arrival at the gate, Christian knocks and one named "Goodwill" answers. After hearing that Christian is desirous of salvation, Goodwill opens the gate to him and Christian goes in. And salvation is for all would desire forgiveness of sins and a restored relationship with God. But it is at the small and narrow gate that we must enter and going against the masses. "Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. 46. Still Only the Cross It Is http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (, 0.00Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #9. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, receiving a rebuke from his friend, Evangelist. It is with a severe countenance that Evangelist chastises Christian for thinking he could be released of his burden of sin through works of the law. And the world would offer another way to attain eternal life aside from the cross, but still only the cross it is. 47. Wisdom from the World http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (, 0.00Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #8. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, having been helped out of the Slough of Despond (by who else but "Help"!), he meets one, Mr. Worldly Wiseman. The burden on Christian's back being apparent to Mr. Worldly Wiseman, he offers Christian counsel on how to be rid of it. If Christian would but step off the path to the Wicket Gate and venture instead to Morality Village where the gentleman by the name of Legality lives, he would find freedom. But it doesn't quite work out according to plan. Upon following Mr. Worldly Wiseman's advice Christian is burdened even more and nearly destroyed by the fires of Mt. Sinai. And sin can not be atoned for through obeying the Ten Commandments / legalism. If it could then Christ needlessly died. "By the works of the Law no flesh will be justified." In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian, along with his companion, Pliable, stuck in the Slough of Despond which drips with the filth of mankind's wretchedness. Pliable is turned back as he thinks the way of salvation should be easier. And it's not enough to be "pliable" to enter the kingdom of God. "Pliable" means that you are easily moved or shaped one way or another. This is good if Christ does the moving and shaping. It is not good if the world does the moving and shaping. "'Behold, like the clay in the potter's hand, so are you in My hand, O house of Israel.'" (Jeremiah 18:6) More to come in the next blog post. Check back soon. |

49. Stuck in the Slough http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (, 0.00Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #6. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian (whose name previously was Graceless), traveling towards the Wicket Gate with one called Pliable. On their way they run into an awful bog called, "The Slough of Despond," which bears the name since it's drips with the filth of mankind's wretchedness. Indeed, Christian and Pliable become stuck in the slough. And during the process of coming to Christ we are confronted by our own sin. It's not a pretty sight, who we are and the things we've done that put the Son of God on the cross. Still we must consider and acknowledge our wicked ways. Doing so prepares us to receive God's grace. "The kindness of God leads you to repentance." (Romans 2:4e) More to come in the next blog post. Check back soon. |

50. The Glories to Come http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (, 0.00Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #5. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Christian (whose name previously was Graceless), through the good word of his testimony, has persuaded one, Pliable, to follow along with him towards the Wicket Gate. They go on to discourse together concerning the things in Christian's book. It is a most pleasureable conversation about the glories of God's kingdom to come. And there is much to look forward to that the Lord has promised to those who surrender their lives to Him. And after this life is through, we'll see the One who died for us on the cross face to face and we'll be joined to Him in sweet communion forever and ever. Are you looking forward to that day? "Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard, and which have not entered the heart of man, all that God has prepared for those who love Him." 51. Enemies in the Way http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (, 0.00Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #4. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man, Graceless, heading towards the Wicket Gate while various people seek to hinder him. Among these are his wife and little ones, his neighbors and then two gentlemen in particular by the names of Obstinate and Pliable. And when a person sets out to lay hold of the eternal life that God affords, there are many who would put a stop to it. Has anyone, maybe even a close relative, ever made fun of, dismissed or mocked your pursuit of Christ in an effort to turn you back? "'[A]nd a man's enemies will be the members of his household.'" 53. An Awful State http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (, 0.00Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #2. In our continuing look at John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," today we find the man whose name is Graceless continuing to be wracked over his upset condition. His grief is further complicated by the book in his hand. Upon reading it, Graceless is moved to exclaim, "What shall I do to be saved?" And the Bible is the only book that speaks to humankind's awful state. We are in the bondage of enmity with God, the chains of disobedience, the prison of sin. It's what the Bible says about our condition. But, thankfully, it doesn't leave us there. "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." 54. A Heavy Burden http://aheartforgod.blogspot.c... download (, 0.00Mb) Description: Journey to the Celestial City #1. John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress" is the #1 best-selling book of all time after the Bible. It starts out with a man undone and wrought with grief over his condition, but he knows not what it is that has brought this feeling upon himself. Indeed, the man has a great and heavy burden on his back. Later, he will discover it's the very issue that's put him in such an upset state. Have you ever felt an unease about your existence? It's a primary way that God uses to get through to a person. It's a primary way through which God speaks. Could He be speaking to you at this very moment? Could He be speaking to you about the burden you're carrying? "Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28) More to come in the next blog post.
