More Japanese Robot News...
http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-20006075-1.html?tag=newsEditorsPicksArea.0

From cnet: "Japan plans $2 billion robot moon base by 2020"

"A Japanese government panel has produced a draft paper outlining how humanoid rover robots will begin surveying the moon by 2015"

"As part of the $2.2 billion project, the droids will begin construction of an unmanned base near the south pole of the moon that will be powered by solar panels"

I hope the robots are as cute as Wall-E and their mission is less tragic than in the movie "Moon"

Nate ♥'s Lasers
http://www.dailygalaxy.com/my_weblog/2010/05/-flash-laser-leads-to-discovery-of-new-state-of-matter.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+TheDailyGalaxyNewsFromPlanetEarthBeyond+%28The+Daily+Galaxy%3A+News+from+Planet+Earth+%26+Beyond%29&utm_content=Google+Feedfetcher

From The Daily Galaxy: "FLASH Laser Leads to Discovery of New State of Matter"

"Like a scene out of Star Trek, Oxford scientists have created a transparent form of aluminium by bombarding the metal with the world’s most powerful soft X-ray laser. 'Transparent aluminium' previously only existed in science fiction, but the real material is an exotic new state of matter with important implications for planetary science and nuclear fusion."

"The discovery was made possible with the development of a new source of radiation that is ten billion times brighter than any synchrotron in the world (such as the UK’s Diamond Light Source). The FLASH laser, based in Hamburg, Germany, produces extremely brief pulses of soft X-ray light, each of which is more powerful than the output of a power plant that provides electricity to a whole city."

"The Oxford team, along with their international colleagues, focused all this power down into a spot with a diameter less than a twentieth of the width of a human hair. At such high intensities the aluminium turned transparent.  Whilst the invisible effect lasted for only an extremely brief period - an estimated 40 femtoseconds - it demonstrates that such an exotic state of matter can be created using very high power X-ray sources."

A brief dramatic reading by Four Dudes on Tech
http://twitter.com/nick_nolte

"Just burped up a false eyelash. Anyone's guess how that got there."

"Happy Memorial Day. I celebrated our fallen soldiers by sneakin' up behind a foreigner and sockin 'im in the kidney."

"Look here, fella, drug-induced delusions of invincibility is my middle name."

"Aw, hell. If I had a nickel for every time I woke up with a monitoring bracelet on, I could buy another 5th."

Woman follows Google Map instead of common sense.
http://searchengineland.com/woman-follows-google-maps-walking-directions-gets-hit-sues-43212

"After Googling walking directions for a trip in Park City, Utah, Lauren Rosenberg claims she was led onto a busy highway, where she was struck by a vehicle. She’s now suing Google for damages."

"In the screenshot above, you can see that Google quite clearly warns: 'Walking directions are in beta.  Use caution – This route may be missing sidewalks or pedestrian paths.' That would seem to negate part of the suit’s claim — except that Rosenberg used a Blackberry. The Blackberry version of Google Maps might not have carried this warning."

So is Google and the dude that struck her with his car responsible for her not using common sense?  You can clearly see from the pictures in the article that the road in question was not pedestrian friendly.

Its on!  Processor war!  AMD just got served!
http://techreport.com/articles.x/18988

From The Tech Report: "Intel's Core i7-875K and i5-655K processors"

This new "K" series of chips is meant to directly compete with AMD's Black Edition processors that "removed clock speed caps and made overclocking dead simple—without the huge price premium traditionally commanded by Extreme Edition and FX processors."

Lots of great charts and graphs on page 2 of this article.  My nips were cutting glass while I was reading them.

"Training Mode" Has a Whole New Level of Meaning:
Gamers have better dream recall, Canadian study finds

Although being pieced together from surveys and not clinical data--though that's next to come--Psychology Faculty Member Jayne Gackenbach (awesome, right?) claims that gamers experience more vivid and intense dreams, with higher frequencies of lucid dream occurrence.

This explains all of my "abandoned old mansion full of gun-wielding strange things" nightmares. No, I'm not kidding, either.
Super Relevant/Hilarious: Gackenbach also asserts that "--Gamers didn't code nightmares as 'threatening.' Rather, they seemed to be having fun." I finally have something to cite when people think I'm lying or psychotic when I say I love my nightmares.

Why does the open source guy look unkempt?

It ain't easy being the Zuck.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/05/17/the-social-network-depict_n_578354.html

A movie is being made called The Social Network paints The Zuck a "ruthless and untrustworthy sex maniac

The Times of London has details: "The film claims that after Zuckerberg quit Harvard his personal life spun out of control, with Parker" (Sean Parker, the co-founder of Napster) "helping him indulge his fantasies with a stream of "groupies". Sorkin's screenplay suggests Parker knew Zuckerberg was driven not just by money or fame but also sexual insecurity. While he is depicted as receiving sex in bars, Parker runs the business."

And you thought Donald Trump had bad hair!
http://www.techeye.net/internet/mayor-of-london-promises-full-wi-fi-coverage-by-2012

The bad-haired mayor of London is promising city-wide wi-fi in time for the 2012 Olympiad

...“every lampost and every bus stop will one day very soon, and before the 2012 Olympics, be Wi-Fi enabled.”

Seriously, its like the guy is wearing a hat of his own hair

Could this end up being a disaster when people start using this city network for file sharing?

Introduction

* You heard it here on 4DoT first: HP has abandoned their "Slate" tablet running on Windows 7. Its rumored that they will introduce a tablet computer running on the newly acquired WebOS.
* The Sarah Palin email hacker has been convicted on some but not all counts. In a move that has us wonder who is smarter, her or her retarded kid, Palin compares this douche hacking into her personal email account with the Watergate scandal. Palin 2012!
* Some elementary school girl in Texas was given detention for a week for having a Jolly Rancher in her possession. Another sad story of another child on candy, just like the kid in "webcamgate" that is on Mike and Ikes.

If Fred builds it, they will come.

* Fred is in the market to build a new computer.
* What should he buy?! Its like shoe shopping for nerds!

Now its a race!
http://gigaom.com/2010/05/10/why-u-s-android-handset-sales-are-outpacing-the-iphone/

* Phones with Android OS outsold phones with iPhone OS in the first quarter of 2010
* Obviously there are more phone models available with Android
* There are also millions of non-AT&T subscribers that cannot get an iPhone with their current network
* However, could this be the beginning of a trend? Is Android hitting its stride?

Are we doomed to no longer actually own what we buy?

* Hollywood has been given permission by the FCC to operate "Selective Output Control" (SOC) in your set-top box
* SOC allows your home theatre to be deactivated depending on what you're watching
* The (farcical) reason given by Hollywood is SOC will allow people to watch first run movies in their homes

http://www.philly.com/inquirer/local/20100420_Lower_Merion_details_scope_of_Web-cam_surveillance.html

Cameras on student issued laptops have reportedly taken 56,000 photos in the last 2 years using surveillance software meant to track lost/stolen computers

Most of the photos are from 6 computers that were stolen and recovered

The surveillance was supposed to be turned off once a student found/recovered their laptop, however in a few instances the tech administrator failed to do so

The software was also activated if a student did not pay the $55 insurance fee and took the laptop home

This seems to be the case in the current lawsuit that's making the big news

Minority Report now in the documentary genre
http://gizmodo.com/5517231/crime-prediction-software-is-here-and-its-a-very-bad-idea

The Florida State Department of Juvenile Justice will use analysis software to predict crime by young delinquents, putting potential offenders under specific prevention and education programs

Using a series of variables, they will use predictive analytics to determine the potential for juvenile delinquents to commit another crime

Depending on this probability, they will put them under specific re-education programs

Deepak Advani, vice president of predictive analytics at IBM: "Predictive analytics gives government organizations worldwide a highly-sophisticated and intelligent source to create safer communities by identifying, predicting, responding to and preventing criminal activities. It gives the criminal justice system the ability to draw upon the wealth of data available to detect patterns, make reliable projections and then take the appropriate action in real time to combat crime and protect citizens."

This sounds like a good idea, to make communities safer and prevent crime, but this could lead us down a slippery slope to a world where everyone is guilty until proven innocent

Dude, you're drunk.  Give me your remote.  Friends don't let friends watch Avatar drunk.
http://scitech.blogs.cnn.com/2010/04/15/samsung-issues-warnings-about-3-d-tv/?hpt=T2

"Pregnant women, drunk people and "those who are sleep deprived" should not watch 3-D television because of potential health issues, electronics manufacturer Samsung says on its Web site."

Those at risk for seizures should consult their doctor before watching 3-D TV

All users should take "frequent breaks" to give their eyes a rest

Don't put your 3-D TV next to a stairwell or on a balcony

Twitter to begin attempting to make money.  Angry freeloaders tweet en mass.
http://www.dailytech.com/Twitter+Gets+Ads+Angry+Developers+Look+to+Make+Their+Own+Platform/article18128.htm
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2362667,00.asp

Twitter will begin advertising with "Promoted Tweets"

"Unlike Google, which places its text-based AdWords ads alongside its search results, a promoted tweet will in fact be a tweet, not an ad. The tweet probably, but not necessarily, will be placed at the top of the search results, identified with a different background color, and labeled as a promotional tweet. Since it is a tweet, users will be able to retweet, respond, or favorite it, just like other tweets."

The system will be simple at first, but will grow a little more complex as it matures (e.g. promoted tweets will get a "resonance" score and will be further or less promoted based on that score)

Many developers are angry with the advertising move and other recent app(lication) acquisitions by Twitter

Some are talking about starting their own Twitter rival.  "They've codenamed their insurrection Project Shark.  Describes one dev in tweetspeak, "Angry sharks eat big fat #fail whales.""

Kick cubicle depression square in the teeth.
http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2010/04/winscape-convincing-fake-windows-for-cubicle-dwellers/

New software turns plasma TVs into virtual windows

Much better than simply playing a screensaver on a big TV

"If you wear an IR necklace or carry a Wimote with you, as you move the software monitors your position and changes the view accordingly. So, if you walk over to the right, say (or strain to the right against the chains which bind you to your desk), you’ll see a little more out the left side of the window."

You can get the software for $10 (Mac OS X only) and a companion app(lication) for the iPhone which lets you control the display

Too drunk to drive home?  There's an app(lication) for that.
http://mashable.com/2010/04/20/ford-sync-applink/

Ford Sync will soon bring Android and BlackBerry app(lication)s to your car with AppLink

Popular applications like Pandora can be voice controlled

Ford is also launching a new Mobile Application Developer Network so that Android and BlackBerry developers can build in SYNC support for their applications

The Ford Fiesta 2011, due out this summer, will be the first model with AppLink

50 years in P.M.I.T.A. prison just so he could read emails about her retarded baby?
http://www.networkworld.com/community/node/60289

This punk thought it would be funny to hack into Sarah Palin's Yahoo! email account in 2008

He is charged with 4 felonies: identity theft, wire fraud, intentionally accessing Palin's e-mail account without authorization and obstructing an FBI investigation

If convicted on all four counts the maximum sentence would be 50 years

Obviously he broke the law, but 50 years seems pretty harsh.  So does carrying the "convicted felon" label for the rest of his life

What would an appropriate punishment be?

Don't take Hitler away from me!
http://www.slyck.com/story1941_EFF_Assails_YouTube_for_Removing
http://ideas.4brad.com/studio-does-content-id-takedown-my-hitler-video-about-takedowns

Many parodies have been made from the "bunker scence" in the German movie "Downfall"

The film's distributor, Constantin Film, is using YouTube's automated Content ID system to remove many of the the parodies

The EFF claims the parodies are "fair use" of copyrighted material

According to them Constantin Film should be forced to file a DCMA takedown request

Is YouTube's Content ID system too coarse?  Should rights holders have to file DCMA requests?

* Microsoft launches a phone called "Kin" that is aimed at social networking
* "This is a phone that knits together a tight community of kindred spirits..., the phone personifies true kinship between people, technology, friends and customers," said Robbie Bach, president of the entertainment and devices division at Microsoft. (Sound of me vomiting loudly!)
* Multi-touch screen and slide out keyboards
* "The phone has an area dubbed the "spot" on to which owners can drag content, such as videos, and then decide how to share it and who to share it with. The phone works with popular social network sites such as Facebook, Twitter and MySpace."

Disciplesaurus has finally made it to the Library of Congress
http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2010/04/library-of-congress-were-archiving-every-tweet-ever-made.ars

Happy "airniversary" to Microsoft Bob
http://technologizer.com/2010/03/29/microsoft-bob/

* Bob debuted 15 years ago on March 31st, supposedly ready to change the way people interact with their computers
* Microsoft Bob is now synonymous with "embarrassing tech failure," due to it being an embarrassing tech failure
* All the applications people needed were inside Bob's "House" and a little cartoon character would help people as they used the apps
* After much hype at CES 1995, most of the tech press lampooned Bob saying it was annoying and mostly useless
* The cartoon helpers were the precursor to everyone's favorite assistant "Clippy"

They should have squibs go off too
http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2010/03/gaming-vest-makes-virtual-fights-real-and-painful/

* A tactile gaming vest being created at the University of Pennsylvania that can make wearers feel a punch or a gunfire hit in sync with what’s happening on screen
* Creates a more "realistic" gaming experience for first person shooters
* What else could make the experience more real?

The Australian Internet Dingo Fence
http://www.itwire.com/it-policy-news/government-tech-policy/37994-captain-conroy-internet-enforcer-slams-google

* "Australia's Minister for Censorship, Senator Stephen Conroy, has slammed Google for its efforts to make the Australian Government see sense in its efforts to cloak Australia with the great Big Brother firewall of Australia."
* Little to no transparency on the list of blacklisted sites
* Could this lead down a slippery slope.

Internship Opportunity: Take us down from the inside
http://torrentfreak.com/warner-bros-recruits-students-to-spy-on-pirates-100329/

* Warner Brothers UK is recruiting students for anti-piracy internships
* "During the 12 month internship, duties will include: monitoring local Internet forums and IRC for pirated WB and NBCU content and in order to gather information on pirate sites, pirate groups and other pirate activities; finding new and maintaining existing accounts on private sites; scanning for links to hosted pirated WB and NBCU content and using tools to issue takedown requests; maintaining and developing bots for Internet link scanning system (training provided); preparing sending of infringement notices and logging feedback; performing trap purchases of pirated product and logging results; inputting pirate hard goods data and other intelligence into the forensics database; selecting local keywords and submitting local filenames for monitoring and countermeasure campaigns and periodically producing research documents on piracy related technological developments. Various training will be provided."
* With such crappy pay, might an intern become disgruntled and become a mole to various pirate hangouts (e.g. Skull Island or Black Beard's Cave)?

Worst Websites Ever!
http://www.addtodesign.com/2010/03/when-the-blind-design-10-websites-that-just-shouldnt-exist-2/

* A list of 10 bad websites from a web design point of view
* Some are absolutely horrendous, some aren't that bad (in Walt's opinion (a.k.a. fact))
* What's worse, not so perfect design or not so perfect spelling/grammar?
* Any other nominations?

And We Wonder Why Spam Still Works
http://arstechnica.com/business/news/2010/03/idiot-users-still-intentionally-opening-clicking-on-spam.ars

* According to a recennt report, 50% of all North American and Western European (apparently the only part of the world that gets email) users admitted to having opened spam, with nearly half of those people (46 percent) doing so intentionally
* That using those numbers, it is finally been proven that 25% of all Americans are retarded
* Who's opening these emails? It has to be the elderly, you say. They're so feeble-minded it just makes sense...
* Well, you must be a retard that intentionally opens spam email attachments because you're wrong!
* Its young people under 35 that know better yet still do it, thus proving the general breakdown in society that we here at Four Dudes on Tech have been foretelling

Is There Anything that Some Deodorant Can't Do?
http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2010/mar/26/beijing-rubbish-deodorant

* "Beijing is to install 100 deodorant guns at a stinking landfill site on the edge of the city in a bid to dampen complaints about the capital's rubbish crisis."
* Why fix a problem when you can just mask the stench of said problem?
* The high-pressure guns can spray dozens of litres of fragrance per minute over a distance of up to 50m, is this what they use for showers at county?

New Text Message From Your Underwear: "Dude, you just sharted."
http://news.cnet.com/8301-27083_3-10471041-247.html

* The world's first electronic underwear alerts a caretaker when the feeble-bladdered person in their care pisses themselves
* Supposedly the unmentionables in question will not electrocute your junk
* Now all we need is a banana hammock that plays smooth jazz to cover the sound of your farts or at least use a deodorant gun to spray your surroundings with dozens of liters of fragrance to mask the smell

* RealNetworks just settled a lawsuit over its DVD copying software making it virtually illegal to ever copy a DVD, even onto your own computer for personal use.
* RealDVD would copy the DVD onto your machine and lock it up with tighter encryption then the DVD originally had.
* This, of course, was not acceptable to the movie studios.
* There is essentially no "fair use" of DVDs. Is it illegal to invite friends over to watch a movie with you?

http://www.osnews.com/story/23002/Obama_Sides_with_RIAA_MPAA_Backs_ACTA

* Obama has sided squarely with the RIAA/MPAA lobby, and backs ACTA, the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement
* This is a big disappointment to us young people that thought this president would be different
* Luckily, the European Union is extremely against this agreement, which means it will probably never come to be

* Who will come out the "winner" of this debate
* According to Walt & Nate, if Google leaves then Google wins. If they drag their feet and the Chinese kick them out then China wins.
* Stay tuned...

* Three out of four polled disagreed with Carr's conclusion and think the Internet is making us smarter.
* Carr still agrees with himself despite poll results saying, "... the Net's effect on our intellectual lives will not be measured simply by average IQ scores. What the Net does is shift the emphasis of our intelligence, away from what might be called a meditative or contemplative intelligence and more toward what might be called a utilitarian intelligence. The price of zipping among lots of bits of information is a loss of depth in our thinking."

This week, after Time Warner's request hit a wall of opposition, legislative committees in the General Assembly put off debate for more study, buying a year's reprieve for municipal broadband advocates."

HAPPY WINDOWS 7 RELEASE DAY!!!

Real time search. Web 3.0?

This is more of a talk piece than an actual story. I'm going to be writing a blog on this topic to further discuss the intricacies of what a real time search actually means for the internet. However, in the meantime, I think it would be helpful for us to share our own thoughts on the direction that real time search will take the web. This will help me to form ideas for said blog.

Will the impact on instant search results aggregated form Twitter and the like help to contribute to a more cohesive internet.?

Perhaps it will lend itself to more or less accurate information. What drawbacks can we see from this type of technology?

One other thought: Will twitter be able to Monetize itself finally? With Google and Bing searching tweets, the infrastructure for twitter will have to be huge due to the amount of searches that will be directed towards its database.

Some interesting links discussing this:
