| Description | You've heard the proverb, 'Give a man a fish, and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you'll feed him for a lifetime.' That's what Heifer does! Heifer works by giving people the skills and gifts they need to lift themselves out of poverty. Through the gift of a cow, a goat, a flock of geese, or a hive of bees, families gain a source of nutrition and income. They can feed their families the milk from the cow or the eggs from their chickens, and sell the excess milk or eggs to send their children to school. Heifer's model is so successful because each family who receives a gift from Heifer has to 'pass on that gift' or 'pay it forward' creating a chain of giving. The first female offspring or equivalent is passed on to another member of that community, helping others help themselves. It's powerful and empowering. The podcast producers, Jesse and Jeane Stern, are Heifer supporters who decided to use their unique gifts and talents to help spread the word about this incredible organization. | |

She recently spoke to a crowd of Heifer supporters about her father, his commitment to peace and justice, and the start of this organization. Jan has worked for Heifer for the past 10 years in the Education department, and is currently serving as Senior Advisor to Heifer International. She is also the author of Give a Goat, a true story of a fifth grade class that got excited about raising money for a goat through Heifer International so other children could go to school. Jan believes that it is so important for young children to get Heifer's message of living together in peace and sharing the resources of a healthy planet. Education is a big piece of Heifer's work. This speech was given at the annual meeting of Heifer's SW region on February 28th, 2009 at the La Verne Church of the Brethren. |
