As a native of Harlem, I care about our city, our district, our party, and most of all our community.  Our community is at a crossroads, and we need a proactive and progressive city councilperson to confront the tough choices before us.  Harlem cannot afford to let its elected officials continue to repeat the same mistakes: extending their term limits, neglecting community input in 125th  street rezoning, and allowing Columbia University’s unjust use of eminent domain. We have elected change on a national level, now it is our time to elect it on a local level. It is time our city council responds to the needs of citizens throughout the 9th district.

Our district leadership has remained reactive instead of proactive over the years. This reactive nature is failing us and leaving all residents behind the curve. It is time we use our vote as a fresh approach to new leadership in order to secure a brighter promising future for our community. An ancient proverb states, “Small minds discuss people. Average minds discuss events. Great minds discuss ideas”.

Below are a few of my ideas for a better community:

Education

• Bring back humanities and arts to all grade levels
• Teach financial literacy to all grade levels
• Reality Learning – adapting the curriculum so students can identify and relate to their homework motivating them to learn
• Professional development classes for High School Seniors
• Implement Green Technology Vocational Curriculums as an option in all general High Schools
• 
  

Economic Development

• Create more tax incentives for small businesses
• Develop more aggressive government initiatives geared towards small businesses to help them succeed
• Designate a green economic zone as an incentive for green businesses to come to our district.
• Encourage developers to use a percentage of district owned businesses in their development plans for our neighborhood
• 
  

Quality of Life

• Develop Healthy Eating Incentives for organic fruit and vegetable stores in our district.
• Supply EBT processing machines to fruit stands and farmers markets to promote healthy eating amongst our district
• Eliminate 60% of alternate side parking regulation to decrease pollution and increase work productivity
• Provide yearly-parking permits redeploying traffic agents to high-congested areas to help the flow of traffic instead of harassing hard working New York City Residents

You can assist many ways in bringing change to City Hall this Tuesday, September 15th, 2009. An adverse critic of the 125th street zoning laws, the Columbia Expansion Plan and City term limits, I promise to be one of the most progressive and innovative council members if elected. Please join our team, by way of volunteering your time or by providing our campaign with a financial contribution. Help me bring progressive thinking and new ideas to our City’s Government.

combating street violence and drugs. This program will feature a mentoring

Since 1989, Susan has prepared for opening her very own education program, first as a Para-professional, public school teacher, then to direct a Day Care Center and finally working her way up to becoming an Assistant Principal within a school of NYC Department Of Education.

Along the way Susan became certified as a NYS School Administrator and Supervisor with 5 licenses, NYS School District Administrator, She also possess from the Department Of Health Permanent Certification in Early Intervention, NYS Permanent License in Special Education, NYS Permanent License in Common Branches (Pre-K, Kindergarten and Grades 1-6), Completed 125 Hours Alcoholism Certification, NYS Certified Health and Safety Trainer, and a Workshop and Business Opportunity graduate (WIBO).

Susan has a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from York College, Masters of Science in Special Education and a Professional Diploma in School Administration and Supervision from Queens College.

Susan also is an Educational Therapist/Evaluator for the Susan Samuel Services Inc. South Ozone Park, New York.  Susan provides educational training and technical assistance to individuals that are interested in starting their own child care centers, renewing their license, and providing educational support.   

She is very active in her professional and local communities Susan is the co-chair of the Child Care/Head Start sub-committee in conjunction with The Greater Allen AME Cathedral and The Jamaica Community Partnership Initiative (CPI) that deals with foster care issues within the community, a member of ACQC/HIV awareness network of Queens NY and a board member of the women and children sub-committee, A board member of  South Ozone Park Community Development, A member of the Federation For Family Unification and Preservation -Susan heads’ the Educational committee.

 Professional Association Of Day Care Directors/NYC, NAEYC- National Association of Education for Young Children,  Kiwanis Club,  and the Association for Mininority Enterprise of New York (AMENY).

“Reach one teach one”, this is a philosophy that Susan strongly believes in; “To empower the family”. In order to make this dream a reality it is imperative that the community cooperate in order to place 24hrs child care learning center in every borough. This would allow parents the freedom to further their education, improve their Socio-economic status, and have me time!   

CHRIS SANTIAGO R&B/POP SINGER

Chris Santiago is unquestionably the next leading International Pop Music figure of his generation. His instinctive understanding of love, passion for performing, willingness to take creative risks, and natural charisma is leading Chris down a musical path of artistry and superstardom. Possessing an ability to captivate audiences with his stage presence and soothing vocal ability, Santiago is an artist fiercely proud of his Hispanic roots, but also capable of crossing artistic borders by fusing that international sound with urban-pop music elements. “I don’t feel complete, without music in my life. Music has been an escape that has never let me down. The feeling I get when I perform is one that can’t be described. There is this rush that goes thru my blood and I’m on a all time high.”

Chris states enthusiastically Born in the city that never sleeps, New York City, NY on July 1, 1986 Chris was set for stardom at a young age. Santiago grew up in Washington Heights for most of his life. Growing up in a Spanish household Chris listened to various music artist. With favorites ranging from Spanish crooners such as Jose Jose and Juan Luis Guerra to R&B/Pop artist like Jesse Powell and Justin Timberlake. “I recall laying in my bed as my parents thought I was sleeping and listen to the songs and then singing along till I fell asleep”. From a young age Chris Santiago would put all of his energy into singing as well performing. At the age of 13, Chris was fortunate to perform at world renowned Carnegie Hall for “Children’s Day” with fellow classmates from his Jr. High School, The Broadway Center at M.S. 44. At about the age of 16 Chris then moved to South Bronx were he now resides. “Moving to the South Bronx was in a way a new start for everything in my life. It open my eyes to a world were the streets weren’t as friendly and you had to fight to move forward” Chris states.

Yusef Miller, Playwright. In 2006, Yusef decided to suspend his acting career to pursue Playwriting. Accepted as a Lila Acheson Wallace Playwright Fellow at The Juilliard School, his efforts were coaxed into reality. As a Juilliard student, Yusef was nurtured under mentors Marsha Norman and Christopher Durang. In 2007, he was awarded the Le Comte Du Nouy Prize for Excellence in Playwriting. In 2008, Yusef was awarded the inaugurated Frederick Fellowship, designed to subsidize emerging Houstonian Playwrights for an entire year. Shelli M. Scott was born in Cleveland, The first time she sat in front of a sewing machine, she was 8 years old from a neighbor she learned many of the crafts that continue on with her today Being in Cleveland money was short.

That’s when she would make her own clothing. At the age of 19 that when she migrated to Washington D.C. While living in Washington she attended Howard University for fashion merchandising. Discovered her ability to visually and interpret ideas on paper. She soon after transferred to the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City to pursue a degree in fashion design. As she was pursuing her career in fashion she was able to become the Apple Bottom visual and merchandising reprehensive for Macy's East Coast division.

Her continue passion gave her the ability to have her dress worn in a Maybeline commercial, and currently freelance with stylist. She continues to be blessed to obtain a work space and will be showcasing a line in the near future. The clothing she designs is considered feminine and sexy for modern day women.

Harlem Up-N-Coming was created to help keep kids off the street and bring families together by sponsoring an Easter Carnival Bash, Father’s Day Basketball Tournament, Mother’s Day Softball Game, Back to School and Community give back day, Halloween Party , Feeds homeless & Senior Citizens on Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas giveaways. It represents a unique source of strength and togetherness, says Anthony ‘Hunc” Nixon, president of HUNC. I want the children and community of Harlem to know that someone cares about them and they can have fun in their very own community. This is just my way of giving back to the community that I was raised in, work in, and live in.

Harlem Up-N-Coming (HUNC) is an elite team of caring individuals who care about our youth and community. We believe by creating a safe, fun environment for today’s youth we are building stronger families and safer communities.

Each year Harlem Up-N-Coming (HUNC) sponsors an Easter Carnival Bash. At this event there are huge flatable rides, an Easter bunny, all kinds of games and activities, food, t-shirts, cotton candy, performances, everything for a kid to be a kid. This event is well anticipated by all. This event would not be possible if it was not for the sponsors. Harlem Up-N-Coming sponsors a back to school & community give back day. We believe that a mind is a terrible thing to waste; therefore we provide school supplies needed to help children prepare for the coming school year. Harlem Up-N-Coming (HUNC) sponsors a Halloween party for children. At this event families come together in costumes, competing in dance contests, and laughing the night away. There are prizes given for the best costumes, and each child leaves with a free candy bag.

Harlem Up-N-Coming also feeds the homeless and senior citizens on Thanksgiving Day at the Central Harlem Senior Citizen building located at 120 West 140th street. We offer a full dinner with the finest dessert. We also give away clothes for every age, coats, boots, sneakers and much more. This event is special because we get to serve individuals who are less fortunate and really make a difference in their lives.

Harlem Up-N-Coming participates in the Christmas giveaway. We answer Dear Santa letters from the local post office, and on Christmas day we deliver $100 dollar gift cards to the homes of less fortunate children.

Vanessa “Heshima” Sims

Vanessa Heshima Sims is a force to be reckoned with in the world of hair and makeup. With over 10 years as a professional hairstylist in the great city of New York the Texas native has proven herself to be both talented enough and savvy tough enough to make her way in the big city.

Despite always displaying a natural talent for doing both hair and makeup, it wasn’t until college and a chance meeting with celebrity stylist Oscar Bond did she realize that the gifts she took for granted could be a fulltime career. “I discovered I had a natural talent I could use to make me a successful businesswoman and it excited me beyond words. I cut hair and did makeup in the dorms for a little extra money and decided to go to an Aveda seminar in Dallas to see what the business was about.  After hearing some of the countries top stylists describe how much money they made while having fun, I was intrigued. Oscar Bond invited me to New York to check out the scene and I fell in love with the city.  I went back to Texas, made my announcement to my family and that was just the beginning.” After a rough couple of years, the footwork and cold calling started to pay off and she has worked consistently ever since.

Known professionally by some as just “Heshima”, Vanessa has personally styled numerous celebrities and musicians such as Khloe and Courtney Kardashian, Whoopi Goldberg, Wyclef Jean, Steve Harvey and Vivica A. Fox. She was even asked during last year’s historic presidential election to do makeup for both former President Bill Clinton and current Secretary of State Hilary Clinton.

Her work has appeared in such critically acclaimed television shows such as “Damages”, “Law and Order” and “Law &Order: SVU”. She has styled celebrities for talk shows ranging from “The Tyra Banks Show” to “Late Night with David Letterman”. And with credits on live productions ranging from “Showtime and the Apollo” and the “VH1 Hip Hop Honors”, to the Broadway production of “The Little Mermaid, to New York’s famed Fashion Week, Vanessa has consistently shown her ability to effectively deal with high pressure situations and volatile personalities.

Vanessa has most recently worked as the Department Head Hair Stylist for seasons 2 and 3 of “The Naked Brothers Band” television show. Currently featured in a Bravotv.com webisode for “Make Me a Supermodel” showcasing her insight into supermodel makeup trends, she will soon make a step into motion picture styling with the upcoming Bruce Willis feature film Surrogates.

“I believe that sometimes you have to leave home to bring your dreams into fruition. My family has supported me through all of my endeavors and my parents always told me that I could be whatever I wanted to be. It was that sense of “I belong here” that has made me a success in such a competitive city and industry.”

Kolie Edward Crutcher III is the founder and CEO of Kolie Crutcher Enterprises, Inc., which also publishes Get Money Magazine. Additionally, Kolie is a graduate of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City, and has performed in several New York Theatrical productions.

Having a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, with a minor in Mathematics, Kolie has held engineering leadership positions at the Consolidated Edison Company of New York, Florida Power and Light, and BellSouth Telecommunications. He is also a dynamic motivational speaker, and a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
