What makes people so curious about celebrities? Not just the obvious interest in their latest movies, or even who they’re dating, but the obsession for even the smallest details—as seen in the sheer number (and content) of available celebrity podcasts. These podcasts contain so much insider information that you wonder if the A-list celebrities can so much as sneeze without reporters scrambling to be the first to tell the world that so and so has the flu.

And what’s funny is that these celebrity podcasts can be amazingly accurate about what the celebrities are wearing. Not just the clothes, or the shoes, but down to the jewelry, the watch, the scarf. (Can you really tell what designer made a scarf from ten feet away? Aren’t scarves just…scarves?)

Other celebrity podcasts focus on celebrity scandals. Messy breakups, screams and hair pulling on the set, divorces and affairs, and whether or not so and so is gay. Let’s not forget the usual rumors of drug abuse and drunken partying that are the publicist’s nightmare—bet you didn’t think that sweet blonde with the dimpled smile could curse at a sailor after one too many martinis.

And there are celebrity podcasts that focus primarily on trivia. Who was Julia Roberts’ prom date? How many celebrities graduated with a Harvard degree? Who was the youngest actor to ever win an Oscar? Silly, yes, but strangely entertaining. At the very least, the information can act like a handy ice breaker. After all, Hollywood is always a safe topic. And you never know if it becomes a category on Jeopardy.

Of course not all celebrity podcasts are about fluff and fun. There are some that try to secure interesting interviews with the people in the film and entertainment industry, getting behind the scenes information and giving listeners an idea of the kind of dedication it takes to become a successful star. There are also podcssts that feature celebrities’ personal charity causes, encouraging listeners to get involved as well.

So we admit, celebrity podcasts are fun. What better way to escape from the stress of our seemingly humdrum lives by borrowing—even for just ten minutes—

the glamour, intrigue and adventure enjoyed by the stars? As we hear about so and so’s dress and so and so’s new supermodel girl friend, we start to feel like a showbiz insider too. We’re part of that circle, we’re part of that life. It’s fun to daydream…and it’s free. Celebrity podcasts may not be for everyone, but it’s the easiest, and cheapest way, to being a star.

You can download recipes from the Internet, and read hundreds of thousands of articles on the world’s many cuisines and the profiles of the most famous chefs.. So it isn’t surprising to find a growing number of podcasts on cooking—and to expect an even more dramatic increase once video podcasts are in full swing.

The “sizzling” numbers aren’t surprising. After all, many people love to cook. They may not have a professional degree in the culinary arts, but they are very interested in developing their skills in the kitchen. For them, food isn’t a primal body need, something to fill an empty, growing stomach. It is an art, a science, a comforting ritual. It is a way of celebrating ones roots, expressing love and affection for family and friends, and at the very least, a cheaper alternative to dining out!

The cooking podcasts cover a wide range of topics, addressing the different facets of cooking. Some are straight-out cooking tutorials, with step-by-step instructions on certain dishes, with recipes and demonstrations. For example, some podcasts talk about the proper way of preparing a soufflé, a notoriously delicate dish. Others discuss grilling secrets or invite sous chefs to share their best tips for a moist chocolate cake.

There are also cooking podcasts that discuss the nature of a specific regional cuisine. Usually these segments center on a particular dish, then try to create the historical or cultural context in which it first emerged. For example, a podcast on sushi will naturally go into Japanese history, when people started serving it, the typical ingredients used and why, and how the country’s aesthetic philosophy influenced why it was presented in that manner. It would probably also go into regional variations and recent innovations, such as the california maki (a purely American invention).

Other podcasts are interviews of famous chefs, who have gained as much celebrity status as Hollywood stars. These are often personality profiles, asking them about their plans for their restaurants, or takes on particularly culinary trends.

There are also podcasts that give reviews of culinary tools, comparing the merits of stoves or mixers, or announcing the latest kitchen gadgets. Others will talk about ingredients, such as the proper substitutions, or a consumer guide on different brands. Aside from this, there are podcasts that review different cooking books. You will also find podcasts that contain excerpts of a cooking demonstration or show. These video presentations are very useful for those who would like to see details like the consistency of a dish or the proper color or texture of an ingredient. Naturally, there are some cooking techniques that must be seen in order to be understood, such as how to decorate a cake, or how to make profiteroles. With the huge number of podcasts on cooking, many of which are available for free, even those who don’t consider themselves to be “real cooks” can easily pick up a professional trick and master at least one dish. That’s good news for the cooking aficionados…and those who eat the meals they prepare.

Of course there are technology podcasts. Just think about it. Long before podcasts became trendy, when nobody knew (or cared) what RSS feeds were, technogeeks were already raving about the digital format and its possibilities. They were the ones who experimented with the software, and started using home equipment to make their own podcasts. Many of them were responsible for the first podcasts that hit the web, which helped hook the listeners and inspire others to make podcasts of their own.

So with the techno geeks spearheading the podcast revolution, it’s only natural that they clamor for podcasts about what they love most: gadgets, software, technology news.

And with all the new developments, there is a lot to talk about. Just the gadgets alone: new telephones, new computer peripherals, new gaming consoles. When the Playstation III was launched, podcasts all over the world talked about the new features and even included excerpts of the latest games in all of their breathtaking, multimedia glory.

Many technology podcasts are product reviews, explaining the pros and cons of each product, and whether or not they fulfill the hype. The good thing about these podcasts is that they’re objective and independent; you don’t have to worry that they are biased or trying to protect their own vested interests. Since they’re run by fellow users, you are more or less guaranteed that their opinions have a real and factual basis. These podcasts are definitely useful for those who are planning to make a purchase and want to get the best for their money.

Other technology podcasts are interviews of technology insiders, who talk about upcoming releases and the features that they are working on. Many of these guests are also invited to answer frequently asked questions sent in by fans or users. Listeners are able to get insider scoops and “hear” for themselves the process by which a gadget or software is developed. This behind-the-scenes information satisfies the true techno-geek’s curiosity and desire to know everything and anything about a breakthrough product

You’ll also find a number of technology podcasts that are geared towards the average user. These podcasts provide how-tos and tips, from how to use the latest software to simple solutions to common problems. One example of this are the podcasts on camera technology. Almost everyone has a digital camera, but very few have the skills to fully use the wide range of features. These podcasts explain the different photography techniques and even give “assignments’ for the week to allow users to test their skills on different subjects and under different lighting conditions and situations.

You’ll also see podcasts that take a more philosophical approach, discussing the effect of technology on society. These discussions are not about the products themselves, but the ethical or sociological impact. How do they change the way people think, act, and interpret reality? Here you’ll find serious and thought-provoking discussions, led by some of the leading scholars and critics.

Everyone needs a good laugh. And comedy podcasts—consistently one of the favorite downloads in major podcast directories—are one way of getting that laugh whenever you need it, wherever you are.

Most podcasts are taped segments of stand up comedy acts. Stand up comedy consists of an informal performance done by a comic, who usually does away wit the proverbial “fourth wall” and interacts with the audience. There are stand up comedy routines in almost every conceivable venue, from theatres to bars to street corners. The podcasts are the most recent in the list of “performance mediums” and usually highlight the best performances of some of the most promising comics.

Most routines consist of short anecdotes, jokes, and fast one-liners. It’s not uncommon for comics to incorporate props or music into their acts; some are masters at sound effects and will add (literally) bells and whistles into their routine.

The point of stand up acts is to deliver a succession of laughs, and keep the audience on their toes (thus the phrase, “laugh a minute”). While it’s very funny, it’s a serious business and takes a lot of skills to master. The comic is under pressure to come up with fresh jokes, with perfect timing. Some of the masters of this very difficult craft says that it takes decades of experience and practice to deliver 45 minutes of brilliant performance.

Unlike theatrical comedy, there is no plot. The comic must create the context, or say the joke in such a fashion that the audience “gets” it in a minimum amount of time. No wonder Will Ferrell, a well known stand up comedian, has called the art of stand up comedy as “hard, lonely and vicious.”

Stand up comedy first emerged in the late nineteenth century, through vaudeville and humorist monologues. One of the first great masters was Mark Twain. They often entertained audiences during intermissions. During the golden age of broadcasting, comedians became famous for their monologues. Some famous names include Jack Benny, Fred Allen, and Bob Hope. Some of the most famous stand up comedians include Eddie Murphy,Chris Rock, Ellen DeGeneres, Robin Williams, Jim Carrey, Ray Romano, Woody Allen, Jerry Seinfeld, Bob Newhart, Bill Cosby, Martin Lawrence, and more recently Dane Cook.

There are some cities that have become famous for their stand up comedy circuits. This include Los Angeles, home to Hollywood and the entertainment industry, where many comics hope to eventually penetrate television and film. Los Angeles has several major comedy venues such as The Comedy Stors, Hollywood Improv, and The Laugh Factory. Big names include Dane Cook, Kathy Griffin, Dom Irrera, Jim Carrey, Jay Leno.

Boston also has a very popular comedy strip, and many of the great comics got their start there: Denis Leary, Louis CK, Dane Cook, Doug Stanhope, Robert Kelly, Patrice Oneal, Bill Burr, and Gary Gulman.

There are also many podcasts made by up and coming talents who see these medium as a chance of developing a name for themselves. They often perform in smaller clubs, or “open” for other acts.

Once upon a time, as the fairy tale goes, a young man went off in search to find his true love. He slayed dragons, he defeated armies, he traveled over the seven seas, he journeyed far and wide to talk to a wise man. Well, you know the drill. When you think about it, that’s a whole lot of trouble to go through for a woman you haven’t met. And while the old fashioned romantics might think that the trials and tribulations are a test of true love, most of us feel that love itself is complicated enough If you can find a simpler way of doing it—if you can get your hands on a secret, or a technique, that will spare you some of the stress (and embarrassment!) of dating—then grab it.

And thankfully, there is a simpler way of getting information: dating podcasts. No need to climb the highest mountain and cross the widest desert to speak to a wise man. All you need is an iPod and an internet connection.

Dating podcasts provide regular tips on all aspects of dating. There are ideas on where to meet other people, and how to dress up and make a good first impression. There are suggestions on how to start a conversation and how to get over the first date jitters. There are also ideas on seduction (in the bar, and in the bedroom) and what exactly you can do to make the other person fall in love.

There are also podcasts that address the many relationship issues and concerns. What do you do when you’re dating someone who’s afraid of commitment? What are the pros and cons of asking someone to move in? Can you really stay friends after you break up?

There are also podcasts that focus on restaurant reviews and suggestions for unique dates. These are great resources for people who see dates as not just an opportunity to meet other people, but to enjoy an evening. After all, if your blind date turns out to be a real loser, at least you get to say that you enjoyed the food.

Some podcasts actually “introduce” you to potential dates. Subscribers are given access to a database of men and women who have signed up for the service. You can view the profiles of the people there, hear their spiels, etc. This service is usually linked with membership to a dating site, where you’ll meet thousands more other people.

The more “adventurous” dating podcasts also give tips on being a good lover. Think of them as the Modern Kama Sutra, with tips and secrets to being a master of seduction. These podcasts also include candid interviews of men and women on “what they like”.

Dating podcasts are a valuable resource for the proverbial prince (or princess) looking for true love (or at least, somebody to have dinner with on Friday night). While they can’t guarantee a happily ever after, at least they’re a lot simpler than slaying dragons and giants, or crossing the seven seas.

Babies aren’t born with instruction manual, and their sleep-deprived, exhausted parents have little time to plough through thick books in search for answers. As many a new mom has lamented, childcare textbooks and comprehensive manuals on fevers and fussiness are helpful only if you have the energy to read them. And most parents thrown into the crazy, confusing world of caring for a newborn barely have the time to brush their teeth.

Enter one of the most convenient sources of information: parenting podcasts. While they tackle the same topics that you’d find in any trusty childcare book—like teething woes, bedtime struggles, and easy recipes for homemade baby food— they don’t require reading. In fact, all you have to do is download them, transfer into your trusty iPod, and push the “play” button. It’s that simple.

The advantage of parenting podcasts is pretty obvious, from a parents’ perspective. You can listen to them while breastfeeding. You can tune in during those mindless chores like washing the baby’s clothes or preparing the next meal. And on a sleepless night, trying your best to rock a colicky child to sleep, a parenting podcast can be just the thing to keep your mind away from the piercing screams, and make you feel just a little less incompetent and confused. (Screaming babies can do that to you.)

You can download a variety of parenting podcasts. Some are full of tips and ideas, shared by fellow parents and child experts. Others are forums that tackle controversial or confusing issues, such as the pros and cons of using the Babywise method. There are also podcasts that specialize in product reviews and consumer reports. These are very important considering the sheer number of products available, some of which are quite pricey—are they really worth it?

There are also podcasts that specialize in bulletins and safety reports, which can save a child’s life. For example, they give announcements of safety recalls, and give valuable advice on child proofing and first aid. They also discuss the best child safety products, such as reviews on car seats, and the importance of a five point harness.

Some podcasts also have interviews of child experts, who answer the common questions of frazzled parents. For example, when can you say that a child’s mischievous behavior is normal, or a sign of attention deficit disorder? What do you do when another child is jealous and refuses to acknowledge the baby? Or how do you balance work and family, and deal with the guilt that hits you when you leave your child with a caregiver for the first time?

The podcasts are also a great way for stay at home moms to feel connected to a broader community. It’s very difficult to socialize with a young baby at home, and the podcasts let them keep in touch with the news and trends, or hear the discussions with other moms, even when they’re alone. For working moms, podcasts are a convenient way of getting information as they juggle the demands of career and family.
